"Dear children!

This is the time of grace. Little children, today in a special way with little Jesus, whom I hold in my embrace, I am giving you the possibility to decide for peace. Through your 'yes' for peace and your decision for God, a new possibility for peace is opened. Only in this way, little children, this century will be for you a time of peace and well-being. Therefore, put little newborn Jesus in the first place in your life and He will lead you on the way of salvation. Thank you for having responded to my call."

T I M E

The end of the year and the beginning of the next millennium is an opportunity for many to underline their own person. So some go through the trouble to create as much fear as possible, while others await the new century only to get rid of some of their difficulties. On average obviously is interior insecurity for the former and a personal feeling of impotence for the latter. The majority is conscious that shifts and turning points do not happen in a short span of time.

The time in which we are living we have already called "the new time". But to a large extent that which we call new is, nevertheless, just "a different time" from the preceding. The concept of time and its content today has countless interpretations. What ought it to mean for the Christian two millennia after Jesus' coming? Besides all the appreciation of the celebrations that are being suggested for the beginning off 2000, a Christian ought to connect the idea of time with what Jesus said at his meeting with Zacchaeus: "I must stay at your house today." (Lk 19:5) Here there is contained something authentically new. Wishing everyone a blessed New Year, I would wish that we be open to the Lord's word, "Today I must stay in hour house!" That would be a life for us completely new and thereby really begins a new time.

THE JUBILEE CHRISTMAS

"According to the flesh, there is only one single Mother of Christ, but according to faith we all give birth to Christ." (St. Ambrose)

While interpreting Luke's Gospel for his faithful, St. Ambrose thus honors Jesus's Mother Mary. Her bodily maternity of the Son of God was already a preordained part of her life, but it continues with maternity of the entire Church in which the person of Christ desires to be totally incarnated. Ambrose therefore does not allow for losing time. He his gaze and the gaze of the Church to that which follows - to birth Christ into the world.

The Jubilee Christmas and the Jubilee 2000 first of all charge us with that as our task and and therefore deserve our attention in external celebrations, but still more in acquiring the capacity to birth Christ to this generation. Are in a position to restore the youthfulness of giving birth to our weary Church by our own faith life? The Jubilee is the historical opportunity of this Christian generation: In ourselves and in our vicinity once again to establish a place for the Lord.

It is in this sense that from our heart we wish to all our readers and pilgrims a Blessed Christmas and Noble Born Jubilee!

CROATIAN PRESIDENT FRANJO TUDJMAN DIES

On Friday December 10, 1999 Dr. Franjo Tudjman, the President of Croatia, died. We report the news about President Tudjman's death to the friends of Medjugorje because of his ties and interest in the events at Medjugorje. During his Presidency he visited the Shrine of the Queen of Peace three times. On more than one occasion he also expressed thanks to the Medjugorje pilgrims for helping unselfishly during the war in Bosnia-Hercegovina and Croatia. We commend our deceased President and the Croatian people to your prayers.

NUMBER OF COMMUNIONS AND CONCELEBRANTS

In the month of November at the shrine of the Queen of Peace in Medjugorje 50,000 Holy Communions were distributed and at the holy masses there were 1,085 concelebrations by priests from home and abroad, that is, 36 per day.

During November the most numerous groups were from: United States, Germany, France, Australia, Hungary, Austria, Vietnam, Poland, Canada, Slovakia, Sri Lanka, Italy, Korea, Haiti, Lebanon, Republic of South Africa, Portugal, Letonia, the Philippines and, of course, Croatia.

MEETING OF THE WORKERS OF MEDJUGORJE ORGANIZATIONS

On November 20th at the Franciscan monastery in Slano a meeting was held for all the workers of the Mothers' Village, the "Domus Pacis" house of prayer, the "Medjugorje-MIR" Humanitarian Association, The Friends of the Talented Fund and the Medjugorje "MIR" Information Center. The meeting in which about 30 workers took part was conducted by pastor, Fr. Ivan Landeka, Fr. Slavko Barbaric and Fr. Miljenko Stojic. Fr. Slavko addressed those gathered on the theme "The Gift-Concerns Developing in Medjugorje". The aim of this annually held meeting is a deepening consciousness about the responsibility of working with pilgrims and all those who cover the activity of these organizations.

They are recommended to our prayers!

SEMINAR FOR VICTIMS OF THE HOMELAND WAR

From December 2nd to 5th a seminar was held in Medjugorje for the victims of the homeland war (widows and parents of the deceased, missing in action and captured Croat defenders). The theme of the meeting was based on the words of St. Paul: "Who will separate us from the love of Christ?"

At the conclusion of the seminar this Joint Declaration of the participants was adopted:

"In these difficult times for the Croatian people and state, Medjugorje all the while has been a signpost for where and how to go further. Many have right in this difficult, but simultaneously gracious time, found comfort and strength in Mary's patronage. And this seminar was one step toward helping everyone, in the light of Jesus' gospel messages and the messages that Mary gives here, to look together according to that light for new ways, ways of hope against every hope. In this seminar, as always, we thought about those dearest to us and sought to conform our thoughts to those of Jesus and Mary, being aware that only with Jesus and Mary can we be Christians in the third millennium."

CELEBRATION OF ST. NICHOLAS DAY

On the feast of St. Nicholas, December 6th, a large number of children gathered in the Medjugorje church for a communal celebration. This year also the arrival of St. Nicholas aroused joy in the childrens' hearts. There was no end to their prayers, enthusiasm and joy. St. Nicholas this time also rewarded the childrens' goodness, and those who are not always obedient were invited to be better, especially now when Christmas is at the door.

FEAST OF IMMACULATE CONCEPTION

In recent days the atmosphere of prayer, peace and community characterized the shrine of Medjugorje due to the large number of pilgrims groups that visited it for the feast day of Immaculate Conception. Local pilgrims came from all parts of the country, while the most numerous foreign pilgrims groups were from France, Italy, USA, Czech Republic, England, Brazil, Austria and Korea.

On the day itself the Peace Rosary was prayed on Apparition Hill. Several thousand took part in the evening Holy Mass.

NEW YEAR

A prayer vigil for the New Year will be held also this year in the church of Medjugorje. The Vigil begins at 10 PM, and ends with Holy Mass at midnight. These are days when the greatest number of young people gather in the shrine of Medjugorje. Therefore, on this occasion we invite all young people who are still thinking about where to close the old year and bring in the New Year, to spend that "craziest" of nights with their peers in the shrine of the Queen of Peace in Medjugorje, and through prayer and song go on in life with the Lord.

ADVENT

We have closed the calendar for the ecclesiastical year of 1999 and the liturgical calendar for 2000 is on the table. Although it will not be an occasion for congratulations, it does not mean that something serious is not beginning. On the contrary! The pre-Christmas season is starting in which there is no more room for the counting of years, but whose contents are valued and counted.

As Christians what should we do to stimulate one another to a more intensive faith life? Criticize? No! Whoever just criticizes wastes energy. Praise? No! The one who is only praised becomes arrogant. Perhaps say to one another something that the other can accept. Open the Gospel and see the simplicity of the Word that edifies and changes! Our Lady's messages and the manner in which she directs us can be for us a good manual on how we can admonish one another about something.

VISITS - STATEMENTS OF BISHOPS

In Press Bulletin #129 we wrote about the visit of bishops that were in Medjugorje at the end of October. In this number we bring you their impressions.

After spending several days in Medjugorje Msgr. Stanislaus Lukumwena from Congo among other things also said this: "The first morning as soon as I came, I went to pray on the Hill of Apparitions. That impressed me very much, because I encountered many people who were concentrated and devoutly praying. An important experience was also the evening prayer program at which there were many people. The many people from different countries and various languages, who prayed together gave me a profound and inexpressible feeling of joy. I am here on a private visit, and therefore officially I accept the position of the Church, but a personal experience is still something else. I can personally say that it is clear to me that all this that is happening here, and especially the great number of people, cannot not be interpreted in any other way than a special intervention of God. Therefore, regarding the authenticity of the apparitions - we should leave that judgment to those persons in the Church are also called to that. I personally am praying that the moment of recognition come as soon as possible. Our Lady has always told us to pray for peace. The world today is divided. There is neither peace nor love. I recommend everyone to try to pray humbly with all their might that peace come as soon as possible to all people. I would recommend to all communities that do not have vocations to come here and pray in this spirit that is alive here and they will certainly have vocations. To all of you who are living here I wish to say that you should continue to work in the spirit of St. Francis: dedicated and humbly, as you are already doing. Keep on hoping, because the time of recognition will come and everyone will be happy."

Msgr. Jose de Jesus Nunez Viloria, bishop of Guyana in Venezuela came with a group of pilgrims and stayed himself as a pilgrim in Medjugorje from October 24 - 28, 1999. He said the following about his impressions:

"After these days spent in Medjugorje I have very positive impressions. It is clear to me that in this place there is something very strong and supernatural. Without this supernaturality these events could never hold out to such an extent and spread like this throughout the whole world. I know that all the more people are coming from the whole world and that many pray here and are converted. This is a great supernatural reality of which the facts themselves speak. The visionaries simply convey that which Our Lady tell them and that is what the Bible calls for: peace, conversion, prayer, fast and the faithful accept it and continue living accordingly. When I listened to one of the visionaries I saw that some pilgrims are concerned also with questions of curiosity, but the visionary answered very simply: she can only say what Our Lady tells her, and they have to ask a priest the other things. My impression is very positive about everything that is happening here. I especially like the evening program, rosary and mass and adoration.

This is the real way of conversion.

The only thing I can say as a brother is that you who work here need to be patient with the people who come here. They come from far away, many things they don't know and, as much as possible, you always have to listen to them patiently and help them. To the visionaries, priests and pilgrims I would recommend to accept Mary who today is helping us in a special way to come to Christ, and He is the only Mediator and Savior. To her Jesus said from the cross: "Behold your son, but to the disciple He said: "Behold your Mother! I am convinced that is the reason of the apparitions that is giving Mary the right and from which comes the duty that she appear and help us and our job is to accept her. What is being announced here is the essence of the Gospel, therefore we have to accept it. Therefore, the renewal of life according to the Gospel is at work. The spirit of devotion and fervor that is seen here will truly serve the new evangelization. I commend myself especially to your prayers, also all priests and the whole world, and I myself promise to pray for all of you."

In the second last week of October Msgr. Emilio L. Bataclan, a bishop from the Philippines made a private visit to Medjugorje. Before leaving Medjugorje he also said this:

"I believe that Our Lady is appearing here. She is the Mother and she cares for us. I believe that she is always with her children, especially when they have to suffer, when the they so many problems. I have no difficulties believing that Our Lady is here because, above all, the "sensus fidelium" [sense of the faithful] says that Mary is here, and also my priestly and pastoral experience through a full 25 years, and now also that of being a bishop helps recognize the special signs that May is present here and that she is caring for her children. I would like to say to everyone: Mary is the Mother who loves and truly has to come to this world. She comes and says what we have to do, because she cares for us. I hope that the world will open its heart and soul to this good Mother. Let us pray mercy for all people to open their hearts. Let us pray for each other. May God bless you all."

PRAYER PROGRAM CHANGE OF SCHEDULE

We announce to all pilgrim groups and individuals who come on pilgrimage to Medjugorje that since September 13th the daily evening program in church lasts from 5 PM to 8 PM (5PM Rosary, 6 PM Holy Mass, blessing prayers and the third part of the rosary).

Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is on Wednesday and Saturday from 9 PM - 10 PM and on Thursday immediately after the evening mass. Adoration and prayer before the Crucifix is every Friday in the church after the evening mass. Every Sunday at 2 PM the Peace Rosary is prayed on Apparition Hill and every Friday the Way of the Cross on Cross Mountain at the same time. Confessions are heard every evening at least one hour before the prayer program starts. With the change from summer time the evening program in church does not change. Only the hour for prayer hour on the mountains changes.

All masses for different language groups take in the morning on the basis of previous reservation.

All announcements in connection with the prayer program in the shrine of the Queen of Peace in Medjugorje as well as other announcements can be obtained from the information office at 00387-88-651-988 from 9 AM till 5 PM. We request all organizers of pilgrim groups upon their arrival in Medjugorje to inform their pilgrims about the possibility of obtaining needed information at the Information Office that is located in front of the parish house and not at the parish office.

SEMINARS AT "DOMUS PACIS"

At the "Domus Pacis" House of Prayer two seminars on prayer and fasting for French and German speakers were conducted in November. A seminar for young ladies was organized and conducted by the Franciscan Sisters from November 5th- 7th, and young members of FRAMA (Franciscan Youth) from Hercegovina held their prayer meeting from November 26th - 28th. "HELP", the organization for aid to youth, also conducted its own prayer - educational meeting this month from November 23rd - 25th.

CHANGE IN THE BULLETIN

As you may have noticed, there no longer appears PRESS BULLETIN in the title of our organ, but only BULLETIN. The reason for that change is the contents and length of the text that we wish to offer you. Accordingly this new title seems to be more appropriate. Moreover, in every Bulletin we will also publish the last message of Our Lady since the word of Our Lady in the parish of Medjugorje is also the reason for all the other events about which we write. With the hope that these changes will be welcome, we send sincere greetings to all readers with a promise of prayer.

ALL SAINTS' DAY

The feast of All Saints' Day is an occasion to recognize the power of God's Spirit in the life of holy women and men and to compare the meaning of one's own life with theirs. They were people made of flesh and blood who - despite their fragility - ennobled and enriched Christian history. "Holiness is not some Nobel prize, but an invitation for every Christian." (Klaus Arntz)

In many messages Our Lady invites us to start on the way towards a holy life. This way is not possible without the Good News of Jesus. The mother of God especially points us towards Jesus Christ: He is the model and the source of holiness. Therefore, holy life is nothing exceptional for a Christian, but rather an obligatory program, interest and goal of our journey in this world.

THE FEAST OF ALL SAINTS' DAY

Traditionally a great number of pilgrims come to Medjugorje on All Saints' Day and All Soul's Day. This year the most numerous pilgrims came from Austria, Germany, France and Italy. Here in this place of pilgrimage, these are days in which we - together with the pilgrims from the entire world - pray especially for the deceased, but particularly for the Croatian defenders, who gave their lives for our freedom. They are not unknown to the foreign pilgrims. The Medjugorje pilgrims became great friends of the Croatian people and their benefactors during the war. They experienced our misfortune and our needs as if they were their own. Many people in the world heard about our small country through pilgrims from Medjugorje and helped the suffering people of our homeland in the most difficult times. They really demonstrated that they were trying to live according to the words of Our Lady from the Holy Scripture: " ... Do whatever he tells you ..." The parishioners of the parish of Medjugorje and all others who experienced their love, care and help always include them in their prayers and ask God's blessing to come down upon them.

THE SELFLESS HELP OF THE MALTESE ORDER

For the past two years, the Maltese Order from Germany has been taking care of the medical needs of the pilgrims here in Medjugorje. More than 4000 persons, pilgrims as well as parishioners, have sought their help. Also this year, the Maltese demonstrated their selflessness by helping pilgrims who sometimes needed to be transported in special vehicles to the airport in Split or to hospitals somewhere abroad. The Maltese order is also active in Lourdes, Rome and in many other places of pilgrimage throughout Europe and the rest of the world.

We want to take this opportunity to thank them from our heart and also on behalf of those who have experienced the blessings of their apostolate.

MISSIONARY JOURNEY OF FATHER SVETOZAR KRALJEVIC

Following the invitation of the organizer and pilgrims from Medjugorje, Father Zvetozar Kraljevic participated in the Marian Conference in Los Angeles, USA, from October 22nd to 24th. About 5000 faithful attended this meeting which, also this year, was organized by the 'Medjugorje Peace Conference'. This year marked the 10th anniversary of this Conference which had as its theme "Open Your Hearts to the Love of the Father". The eucharistic Mass which concluded the meeting was celebrated by Msgr. Tod Brown, the newly-named bishop of Orange County. Particularly impressive were the experiences of the priests and sisters, who had received their calling at such prayer meetings during the past years and the active commitment to spread the messages of peace of Our Lady in their midst. As so many times before, actions of love for needy brothers were visible: Money was collected for the renovation of the roof of the St.John's Church in Podmilacje near Jajce.

THE 100th ANNIVERSARY OF THE FRANCISCAN SISTERS

On the 23rd and 24th of October, the 100th annivesary of the Franciscan School-sisters Christ The King in the Hercegovina was celebrated. The sisters who work in the parish of Medjugorje belong to the province of the Holy Family in Hercegovina, which - at the moment - numbers 237 sisters. We are sure that many groups of pilgrims and individual pilgrims who come to Medjugorje are aware of the selfless daily work of these sisters. The main activity of this congregation is the education and upbringing of the young. In addition, the sisters care for the sick in hospitals and do pastoral service in the parishes in the Hercegovina. This important anniversary has been remembered throughout the entire year in various ways. The main celebration took place on October 23rd on which occasion the Provincial, Sister Iva Beslic, opened a symposium in Mostar. Those present were welcomed by the local bishop, Msgr. Ratko Peric, and the Provincial of the Franciscans in the Hercegovina, Father Tomislav Pervan. This festivity on the occasion of the 100th anniversary ended with the feast of the holy Eucharist, which was celebrated by the bishop of Banja Luka, Msgr. Franjo Komarici. In the name of all pilgrims we conveyed our congratulations to the sisters of this congregation and asked the Lord that he may bless their work and efforts.

INTERNATIONAL PRIEST MEETINGS

The fifth international Meeting of Priests "Priests in the School of Mary" will take place from June 30 to July 6, 2000. The theme of this meeting is, "Priest - A Man of the Holy Trinity and a Servant of the Body of Christ". The speakers will be Father Daniel Ange, Father James Manjackal, Father Rufus Pereira, Father Martin Ramoser, Don Cosimo Cavaluzzo, Sister Elvira Petrozzi, Father Jozo Zovko and Father Slavko Barbaric. The parish will give those priests who are attenting the meeting free lodging during their stay for the meeting. Please come to the parish office in Medjugorje upon your arrival and you will be given the name of the family you will be staying with and who will be taking care of you during your stay.

You can register for the meeting either via Fax: 00387-88-651-888 or in the Information Center of the shrine (Tel: 00387-88-651-988).

"Dear children!

Do not forget: this is a time of grace; that is why, pray, pray, pray!

Thank you for having responded to my call."

October 25, 1999

PRAY, PRAY, PRAY

This short message of October 25th - the three-times repeated call to prayer - is an incentive for us to remember: Prayer is not only a plea for the fulfillment of our needs. Saint Augustin gives a very important guideline for prayer: One should allow God to incline His ear upon our heart and allow our heart to incline upon God's ear. This is decisive and it is the art of praying. This, by the way, is also the art of praying for every human being. However, it is not our achievement, but rather the ability of that Spirit that God gives us and who prays within us, since we do not know how and for what we should pray, according to St. Paul.

So let us incline our heart upon God's ear and let us allow God to rest His ear upon our human heart. That is what Our Lady means when She calls us to prayer.

NUMBER OF HOLY COMMUNIONS AND CONCELEBRANTS

During the month of October 140 000 faithful received holy communion in the Sanctuary of the Queen of Peace in Medjugorje and 3 047 priests from here and abroad concelebrated holy masses, that is 98 each day.

Throughout the entire Catholic world, the month of October is marked by great piety for the Virgin Mary. That is why such a great number of pilgrims came to this Marian Shrine during this month. The faithful came from all over the world. The most numerous were from the US, Poland, England, Ireland, Austria and Germany.

VISITS OF BISHOPS

During October, five bishops came on a private visit to Medjugorje: Msgr. Joseph Mugeny Sabiti and Msgr. Christopher Kakooza from Uganda, Msgr. Stanislas Lukumwena from the Congo, Msgr. Jose de Jesus Nunez Viloria, a retired bishop from Venezuela and Msgr. Emilio L. Bataclan from the Philippines.

In this Press Bulletin we quote the impressions of the two bishops from Uganda. Among other things, Msgr. Joseph Mugeny said: "I have no problem about anything here. In fact, what is happening here is with great intensity. All over the world, there are things happening. This time we are living in is a special time. God is giving us special graces through this place. Many people who have problems with their faith should come here to Medjugorje. Medjugorje is a chance, a privilige, special gifts given by God through the Blessed Virgin Mary to help us. The world is in an extremely bad state and it is good that we have places like Medjugorje. Wars, divorce, drugs - all these are bad things. We need such a place where we are able to learn about true love, true peace, true faith. So there is no doubt about what is happening here. It is much more intense here than in any other place. The people living here are very prayerful. I believe that the persons who lead the Church should come here and experience the graces and gifts of this place, which will help them to live a better life and to lead others towards God in a better way."

Msgr. Christopher Kakooza had the following thoughts: "The Blessed Virgin Mary has appeared in many other places. Important is Her call for compassion, prayer and penance. Our Lady asks us to sanctify our lives, to convert, to turn our lives toward God so that we may be worthy to enter heaven. I think the message we must take to the whole world is conversion, prayer and to go towards God and so to open the way to eternity."

MISSIONARY TRIP OF FATHER BRANIMIR MUSA

Father Branimir Musa spent the months of September and October in the US. He held three retreats in Chicago for members of hercegovenian Franciscan order in the US. Following the invitation of Medjugorje-pilgrims and Centers for Peace, Father Branimir attended Marian Conferences in Chicago and Portland, both of which lasted two days and were attended by thousands of faithful. Such encounters confirm that Our Lady's message of peace is spreading from Medjugorje throughout the entire world and finds fertile soil among modern man who seeks peace.

VISITING THE PRISONERS IN DEN HAAG

On behalf of the parish of Medjugorje, Father Slavko Barbari visited our prisoners in Den Haag on October 1, 1999. The visit had originally been scheduled on September 17th, however, for some unknown reason no entry permit was granted for the Netherlands at that time. Fr. Slavko was welcomed by Fr. Pavo Dominikovi, the missionary for our countrymen who work in the Netherlands. He visits the prisoners once a month. During their cordial talk, which lasted four hours, they spoke about their trials, the court proceedings, the witnesses - most of whom testify but want to remain anonymous. In any case, this is very significant! This was followed by personal confessions and the celebration of holy mass. All are in good spiritual, physical and especially in good mental condition. One of them said: "While listening to a witness, I felt sorry for him because I know that after all these lies he will not be able to find peace. So I began to pray for him."

General Blaški is awaiting his verdict with dignity; the prosecutor is asking for lifelong detention whereas the defense is pleading for an acquittal. Furunija and Muci have appealed their verdict and are waiting for a court order. The hearing against Darijo Kordi is still in progress. Many of the witnesses are former observers and humanitarian helpers. Now their true reasons for wanting "to help" have become even more apparent. The legal proceedings are continuing. The trials of the Krupeški brothers, Vlatko Krupeški, Papi, Josipovi, "erkez and Šanti have ended. New among them is Vinko Martinovi-Štela from Mostar. All are in good spirits. They are aware that their trial is more of a political nature than a question of personal guilt. The logic of politics is unpredictable and so the verdicts are very uncertain. They have accepted the fact that here judgement is passed on the entire Croatian people, whose mere existence is bothersome to many. However, they are convinced that justice will prevail. They are particularly grateful to Medjugorje for organizing prayer meetings for them. Every first Saturday of the month, their families come on pilgrimage to Medjugorje. The prisoners are very thankful to those who include them in their prayers and to those who help them with material means.

FATHER LEONARD ORE REVISITED KOSOVO

Father Leonard Ore, the President of the humanitarian association "Medjugorje-Mir" in Split, visited Kosovo again on October 11, 1999. By talking with the priests and the population, he found out that conditions have not improved. Winter is near and the roofs of the burned houses have not yet been repaired. Many who have returned still live in tents next to their destroyed homes. The international humanitarian organizations have taken on the responsibility to repair the demolished roofs and to close the holes but, up to now, almost nothing has been done. Also the supplying of food, clothing and shoes is not adequate. It is necessary to now ask benefactors and small humanitarian organizations to help directly so that they will be able to supply the people of Kosovo with food and clothing before the onset of winter - especially in the more remote areas. In addition, there is a need for furniture and agricultural machines. We want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has helped the population of Kosovo in such a selfless manner.

ABOUT "FRAMA"

In the last Press Bulletins we mentioned some of the important events regarding the spiritual life of the youth of our parish. October 10th was also an important day for them. We take this opportunity to inform you about the activities of FRAMA, the Catholic youth organization, in the parish of Medjugorje. FRAMA (Franciscan youth) is an organization to which belong young boys, girls, students and workers. The goal of this organization is to educate young people towards an active Christian life. FRAMA has been active in Medjugorje for the last three years and has about 50 members. In addition, there are candidates who want to join FRAMA, the "messengers of St. Francis". Since the FRAMA members are young energetic youths, it is the goal of the leader to use this energy in the right manner. The various activities of FRAMA include: weekly meetings for discussions and prayers, pariticipation in the liturgy of the local church (leading the rosary and sometimes singing during the mass), working in the media (editing of transmissions for the radio station "Mir", Medjugorje, and writing of articles for the Catholic press), stage-plays, ecological and humanitarian work, pilgrimages to wellknown places of pilgrimage etc. Also this year, eleven members spent some time on the island of Jakljan as hosts for the children and wives of the fallen Croatian defenders - who were there on vacation. Working with the children and leading them in the prayer program, the youths had a wonderful opportunity to give witness of their being part of the Franciscan movement. On October 3rd, the feast of St. Francis of Assisi, together with members of three Franciscan orders, they performed the rite of St. Francis' passing away. On Sunday, October 10th, eighteen members extended their vows to live according to the gospel in the manner of St. Francis. At the same time, having met all prerequisites, fifteen candidates made their first vows. The vows were accepted by the parish priest, Father Ivan Landeka, who was assisted by Father Branko Radoš, the spiritual guide of the youth.

RETREATS AT "DOMUS PACIS"

During the month of October, the humanitarian association "Help" organized two retreats as part of a program to prevent addiction for about 50 young people from Central Bosnia. The retreats lasted for three days. They were led by the leaders of the association and Father Branimir Musa.

SACRIFICE AND JOY

In these times, people - even Christians - have difficulty to associate asceticism and self-sacrifice with a feeling of joy and happiness. This is almost unthinkable. Is this even possible? One can best find an answer to this question with the person of Francis of Assisi. This could possibly be the greatest secret of his life: to succeed in combining asceticism and joy. We ask ourselves, how is this possible?

Francis' cheerful nature is not the result of naivety and superficiality. Had his lightheartedness and well-balanced attitude only been limited to certain areas of his life, one could say that something in his head had not been right. His joyful relationship with God did not preclude his kindness towards mankind and nature. So his life is a contribution to the church of his time, to discover joy in the gospel, which is something the Church has forgotten a long time ago. But this original spirit of faith keeps knocking at Her door.

VISIT OF AUSTRIAN BISHOP

After having taken part at a meeting of the faithful with the Holy Father in Maribor (Slovenia) on September 19th, the archbishop of Salzburg (Austria), Msgr. Georg Eder, visited Medjugorje on September 20th. On this occasion he said the following:

"I am here now for the second time, but not officially, since - up to the present - a bishop is not allowed to come on an official pilgrimage here. I came to Medjugorje for only one day for personal reasons. I greatly trust in Our Lady of Medjugorje. Also I, as bishop, carry many things around with me which burden me. Then one needs to go somewhere to look for help and find it. Every smart child goes to its mother. So the bishop also needs help. At the beginning of the year, I found much help here and I hope that, also this time, I will not leave emptyhanded.

What happens here is not wrong, it is not a lie, but it is good. When, at some time in the future, the credibility of the events here will be accepted, what will happen to those who did not believe? There is no doubt about it: what happens here is good. What happens here is what should happen in the Church: prayer, mass, confession, adoration, conversion, the formation of prayer groups, vocations. These are all in light of the events which are being guided by Mary, with which She is preparing us for the new millennium. Much is happening here that we in the Church have forgotten. Mary calls and teaches us. For the Church in Austria, I can say: 'We have forgotten much and we must begin anew with what Mary tells us in Medjugorje.'

Since the beginning of the apparitions the 19th year is passing. There are six visionaries. It is interesting that throughout all this time their credibility has remained intact, they have never contradicted themselves. This is a true miracle. In Lourdes, there was one visionary, in Fatima there were three - and the apparitions only lasted a short while. Here it is completely different. Our Lady does not speak about what is happening at present. There was a terrible war here. But now I see that this was very wise. If She were to start speaking about things that are happening in the world, there would be a great danger of getting too involved. When I asked the visionary, Ivan, why Our Lady never speaks about the problems of our times, he simply answered that Our Lady tells us what we should do: that we should pray, personally, in our family and in prayer groups. And I realize that it is really so. The reason for war and every other distress lies within us. When people find peace in God, they can transmit this peace to others. That is why Mary is right. Here people experience joy, peace and happiness. I see that. The best way to heal the many negative things in the world is to point toward the positive things.

I must admit that at the beginning the messages were too simple for me. We theologians are like that. We want something great. Sometimes I thought the messages to be too banal and too simple. This was how I felt until my first visit. But since then, I experience them differently. Every evening I read one message. When I read it the first time, it again seems very simple. But when I read it the second time, I realize that we are being told in a simple way what we need. We are like that: we want great movements, sublime things, and forget that everything starts in a very simple manner in the heart of each one of us: first peace, then towards the light and then joy. Mary is a mother and She speaks simply. Very often I recall the words of my own mother: 'How often do I have to tell you that?' While always repeating the same things to us, she was educating us. So what our mother said came into our hearts. I remember how she admonished us to pray and to go to confession. But every friday she still had to remind us not to forget confession. Here in Medjugojre, Mary has chosen the right way to help us and I am grateful for everything.

Although only for one day, I was glad to be able to come to Medjugorje and I must admit that with this visit I also thought of myself. I thank you for everything and may God bless you in everything you are doing here."

PRAYER MEETINGS IN BELGIUM AND LUXEMBOURG

As we already mentioned in the last edition of the Press Bulletin, Father Slavko Barbaric was in Belgium and Luxembourg from the 17th to the 20th of September.

In the evening of Sept. 17th, in Brussels in the beautiful franciscan church, about 250 to 300 faithful - most of whom are Medjugorje pilgrims - gathered to take part in the adoration of Jesus in the most blessed sacrament of the altar. The next day, there was an all-day prayer meeting in Beauring, the Belgian place of pilgrimage, where Our Lady appeared in the early thirtees of this century, especially calling for prayer and the conversion of the sinners. The prayer meeting began with a short welcome, the praying of the sorrowful mysteries, talks about the messages of Our Lady, the glorious mysteries, followed by the celebration of holy mass with many priests who had been available for confession throughout the entire time. The program ended in the evening with the adoration of the holy eucharist and the prayer for healing. A great number of faithful attended the meeting. Father Mark, the founder of the missionary community "Tiberiada" spoke about his vocation and the work of his community, which is open to all, particularly to the youth. He spoke vividly about the spiritual fruits of the community and about its missionary work. His talk was very picturesque; at one point, he stood up and let a white dove fly over those present. In addition to this symbolic act, he also strew wheat grains throughout the entire pilgrimage place, as a symbol for the sowing of the words of God. He put some wheat sheaves in front of the statue of Our Lady, symbolizing the richness of the fruits of the sown words. Throughout the entire day, he gave testimony about the spirit of prayer the Queen of Peace has put into the hearts of the pilgrims who tirelessly have remained true to Her call to pray personally, in the families and in the newly-formed prayer groups.

On September 19th, Fr. Slavko visited the family of Prince Henry of Luxembourg in their castle in Fischenbach. His wife, Princess Maria, who was born in Cuba, had been in Medjugorje in the middle of July with three of her five children. She also gave testimony of the rich experiences she and her children had in Medjugorje and how these help her in her daily responsibilities. The meeting was cordial. The beautifully-furnished, magnificent castle, which is situated in a dense forest, really looks like a fortress on a mountain. The light of faith shines within it. They have a private chapel. Taking a walk with the family, they paused for prayer in front of a statue of Our Lady, situated in a natural grotto, and then all joined in singing the song "Gospa, majka moja, Kraljica mira" (Mother of God, my Mother, Queen of Peace) in Croatian. It was a great surprise to be able to sing in Croatian in this house. It is wonderful to see how Our Lady succeeded to find people over the entire world who love Her and follow Her. Princess Maria told Fr. Slavko: "Medjugorje is for me like oxygen, which makes it possible for me to breathe". Although she was there in July, she is planning to return with her children at the end of October. Prince Henry will not be able to come, as he has to represent his father in state matters. Maria, who is President of the Association for Handicapped, promised to donate a special car for handicapped children, for whom a day-care center has been opened in the 'Majcino Selo' (Mothers' Village) in Bijakovici.

That afternoon the program continued in the parish church in Gilsdorf, which was filled to burst. The program included the prayer of the rosary, adoration of the most holy sacrament, the prayer for healing, celebration of holy mass and the veneration of the holy cross. Everything was spoken and sung in two languages - german and french. The joy and peace emanating after the prayers and songs were obvious.

Fr. Slavko spent the evening with Robert and Dorothee Holm, who converted from Protestantism, and are now tirelessly spreading the messages of Our Lady. They publish a monthly pamphlet with a ciculation of 25.0000. Among its readers are many benefactors who continuously help in many projects in Croatia and BiH. They also help the "Majcino Selo" and their donations made it possible to build a house for needy children.

Again, after these prayer meetings the conclusion is the same: Everywhere, Mary, the Queen of Peace, has kindled the light of faith, love and hope in many hearts, but especially the spirit of prayer.

THE INVALIDS OF THE WAR

From October 6th to 10th, the invalids of the war from the Republic of Croatia and Bosnia-Hercegovina took part in sports competitions in Mostar and Medjugorje. By participating in the competitions, about 600 participants gave each other hope and demonstrated that there is a way also for invalids. During these difficult years during and after the war - which are behind us now, thank God! - we experienced how much light Medjugorje has brought to those who one way or the other became victims of the war. We realized that this is a reality on October 7th, the day of the Queen of the Rosary - when the invalids made a pilgrimage to Medjugorje. Holy mass was celebrated by the parish priest, Father Ivan Landeka, who in his homily called to sacrifice and trust in God. And Mary is also here who grants special gifts to those who come to Her.

Through our prayer we can also accompany these people who helped in a selfless way to make our freedom and our existence a reality.

THE 7th MEETING OF THE LEADERS OF THE CENTERS FOR PEACE AND THE MEDJUGORJE PRAYER GROUPS

In the last Press Bulletin we did not bring the curriculum vitae of one of the lecturers, Fr. Sabino Palumbieri.

Fr. Sabino Palumbieri - born in 1934 in Lavello (Potenza). He is a member of the order of the Salesian Fathers. He was ordained a priest in 1961. He studied philosophy and theology and obtained a doctor's degree in anthropology. At present he is a professor at the Papal University of the Salesians (UPS). He is a journalist and writes numerous essays from an anthropological viewpoint on the cause and meaning of the events of our time. He founded the society "TR-2000" (Witnesses of the Resurrection for the Jubilee 2000) and a national movement with international cultural affiliations which organizes humanitarian-Christian activities. In addition, he is the organizer of "Via Lucis" (Way of Light), a new form of piety of the people, which is spreading throughout the world.

At the meeting in Neum, he will give a lecture on the theme: "The Position of Christianity in Modern Civilization".

THE RADIO STATION "MIR" MEDJUGORJE LIVE ON INTERNET

On October 4th, the feast of St. Francis, we started to operate with a strong server and are now able to transmit the signals of our radio station "Mir" live. The server was supplied by Avacom from Mostar and they helped with its installation. Ing. Stipe avar, our web-master until now, will be responsible for its functioning and contents.

The installation of the new server has enhanced the quality of our work. We are now not only able to transmit live the daily rosary and holy mass from the St. James Church in Medjugorje but will also be able to send videos from Santuary of the Queen of Peace from Medjugorje. Until that time, we will bring video material on our Internet-pages on special events in Medjugorje, as well as documentaries about happenings in the parish.

The signal of our radio station is on the web-pages (www.medjugorje.hr) in the section Audio-and Video-Documentation. Should we hear of any difficulties in getting the server connected with Internet in the preliminary stages, we will immediately try to rectify the situation.

This work requires mental work as well as material means. We thank everyone in advance who will be able to help us in one way or the other to spread the messages of the Queen of Peace.

ROBOX IS BEING ABOLISHED

One can easily say that Internet has become part of our daily life. We have also noticed this as the number of people who still use robofax has been diminishing. This is why we have decided to put still more emphasis on the distribution of information about the Sanctuary of the Queen of Peace on Internet.

As a result, robofax will be abolished as of December 31, 1999. There are no good reasons to justify its continuation. We herewith ask all those who still use the robofax to get connected to Internet or to ask someone who has access to Internet to supply them from time to time with certain information. This is also more economical than the robofax.

We hope that you will support us in this endeavor, as it is our wish to use the time for spreading the messages of the Queen of Peace as rationally as possible.

PRAYER OF THE ROSARY

The month of October in Catholic tradition is the month during which the prayer of the rosary is proclaimed. On the one hand it proclaims the importance of that prayer form, while on the other hand not diminishing thereby the immense prayer treasury of the Church throughout two millennia. The prayer of the rosary has shown itself to be a prayer form for all age levels and that we can therefore shape it in different ways, while not thereby destroying its prayer content. In that prayer form there is left a great amount of room in which it can in various ways be enriched and adapted to circumstances, to age groups and the prayer habits of the individual or of a group.

The prayer of the rosary is "a plunging into Mary's very breath of life, the substance of which is Christ! (Guardini)" The theology of the Christian Church of the East calls Mary the "hodegetria", which means the companion on the way to the face of God.

I would wish for all who will pray the rosary through October that with Mary they deepen their bond with Christ!

NUMBER OF COMMUNIONS AND CONCELEBRATIONS

During September in the shrine of the Queen of Peace in Medjugorje 120,000 Holy Communions were distributed and there were 3,100 concelebrations at Holy Mass by priests from home and abroad, that is 100 priests daily.

To enumerate the countries, as we usually do, is quite impossible due to the great number of countries from which pilgrims came to Medjugorje during September. We will only say that the faithful came on pilgrimage to this shrine during September from all five continents and that the most numerous were groups from Latin American countries.

PRAYER MEETING IN FULDA

On September 11th in the German city of Fulda a prayer meeting was held for all Medjugorje pilgrims and friends of Medjugorje from Germany. This is already the fourth meeting of that kind. Greeting those faithful gathered in the overflowing cathedral Fr. Dominic Ramljak addressed a special greeting to Msgr. Johannes Dyba, the Archbishop of Fulda who presided at the Eucharistic celebration. In his address to those Medjugorje pilgrims present, he said this among other things:

"Those who persevered beneath the cross were the first ones that saw Jesus after His resurrection. The understanding that resurrection exists gives us strength to persevere in carrying the cross. For a Christian it is a privilege when he is permitted, like Simon of Cyrene, to persevere under the cross. Today also Jesus is going on the way of the cross through time. . ."

Fr. Ivan Landeka, the pastor of Medjugorje, also participated in the prayer meeting and on that occasion told the gathered faithful:

"That which bonds people with Medjugorje is the experience of faith. In the heart takes place an inner healing that gives a person the strength to help others. It isn't a simple thing to understand and interpret the cross. Jesus took charge of his task and fulfilled it on the cross. On the cross the history of salvation becomes evident. Therefore, one is not allowed to forget the positive and salvific message of the cross. The messages that the Mother of God is giving in Medjugorje since 1981 are a help to the church today. Prayer conversion, fasting, peace, reconciliation and Eucharist are man's way to Jesus. The man of today needs a home, but that can only be God. A confirmation of that is the 15,000 young people who gathered in August at the international prayer meeting in Medjugorje.

PRAYER MEETINGS IN BELGIUM AND LUXEMBOURG

At the invitation of Medjugorje pilgrims Fr. Slavko Barbaric visited Belgium and Luxembourg from September 17th to 20th. We will publish his impressions from that missionary journey in the next Press Bulletin.

11TH INTERNATIONAL MEETING OF CENTERS OF PEACE OF CENTRAL AND SOUTH AMERICA

The representatives of 17 Latin American countries gathered from September 24th - 28th in Medjugorje for the 11th international meeting of the Centers of Peace. The theme of these years meeting was: Mary calls: Return to the Father." These centers have arisen throughout Latin America as places of gathering for all those who sense the importance of Our Lady's call in Medjugorje. Their activity pertains primarily to the spreading of the messages and the organization of prayer groups and of pilgrimages. As we have said, this is the 11th meeting, but just the third time to be held in Medjugorje. For five days 430 participants spent time in prayer and meditation, exchanging the experiences of their years-long work in spreading Our Lady's messages of peace among the faithful of the Spanish speaking regions. Especially stressed was the need for spiritual growth in the living of Our Lady's messages for each individual, as well as the spreading of the messages to others, and the founding and direction of prayer groups. This is an incentive and a good example to everyone of how to work together in the spreading of the messages of peace.

After the meeting was finished about 100 participants continued their pilgrim stay in three days of spiritual exercises in Medjugorje.

SEMINARS AT "DOMUS PACIS"

At the "Domus Pacis" house of prayer two prayer and fasting seminars were conducted. From September 13th to 18th fifty Polish pilgrims participated in one seminar, while from Oct 4th to 10th a seminar was conducted for 35 pilgrims of German speaking regions. There are always more and more groups of various languages that are registering for this kind of seminar. Many have discovered the strength of fasting and prayer on their pilgrimage to Medjugorje and have decided to go on that path following Our Lady's call to prayer and fast.

At the same house from September 24th to 26th a seminar was held for girls that for several years the Franciscan sisters have been organizing.

FEAST DAY OF ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI

The feast of St. Francis of Assisi is celebrated on October 4th in the entire Catholic world, but that feast is nevertheless especially solemn in Franciscan communities. It was that way in Medjugorje. On October 3rd, the day of Francis' passing away, a solemn evening mass was celebrated. The church for that occasion was particularly decorated with flowers and candles, and the Franciscan friars and sisters who are assigned to serve in the parish of Medjugorje, went in procession singing through the church yard and came back before the altar where the rite of St. Francis' passing away was performed.

7TH MEETING OF LEADERS OF CENTERS OF PEACE AND MEDJUGORJE PRAYER GROUPS

The parish office of Medjugorje for the 7th year already is organizing a meeting for the leaders of prayer groups, and of charitable and pilgrimage groups connected with Medjugorje. It will this time also be held in Neum at Hotel "Sunce" from March 19th to 24th, 2000. The theme of the seminar is: "Medjugorje - A Prophetic Thrust For the 21st Century."

FEAST OF THE EXALTATION OF THE CROSS

The feast of the Exaltation of the Cross has already been celebrated solemnly in the parish of Medjugorje for decades. The cross, raised above Medjugorje in 1933 for the anniversary of Redemption by Our Lord, once a year gathered a large number of parishioners and a smaller number of pilgrims. But since 1981 the Holy Mass on Cross Mountain gathers tens of thousands of pilgrims from the whole world and a large number of parishioners and pilgrims from Bosnia-Hercegovina and Croatia. According to the testimony of the visionaries, Our Lady once appeared to them with a cross. That apparition became one of the most impressive and most important.

To better understand the meaning of the cross we have to remember that the Risen One showed himself to His disciples with the wounds He had on the cross. And, the disciples did not understand them as wounds that cause fear, but rather wounds that liberate. True there was initial fear, but just as everything about the risen Jesus was liberating, so also were the wounds of His cross liberating. Therefore, we Christians at this time are not allowed to look at the cross in any different way, or consider the cross unpleasant and difficult. The cross is something much more and if we would not see much more in the cross than that, then we are in danger of becoming enemies of the Lord's cross. How shall we announce the greatness of the cross, if we ourselves experience it and interpret it incorrectly?

CELEBRATING THE FEAST OF THE EXALTATION OF THE CROSS

The feast of the Exaltation of the Cross was also celebrated solemnly this year September 12th on Cross Mountain. In the presence of tens of thousands of pilgrims the Holy Mass was celebrated with 80 concelebrants by Fr. Stanko Dodig, Guardian of the Capuchin monastery in the parish of Our Lady of Lourdes in Rijeka. Just as every year a river of pilgrims streamed into Medjugorje already during the night. Many of them came on foot for hundreds of kilometers, some also bare footed.

The feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary was solemnly celebrated September 8th - the Birth of Mary. Since already then a large number of the faithful were gathered in Medjugorje, many of them stayed on in Medjugorje for the celebration of the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross.

MEDJUGORJE PILGRIMAGE IMPRESSIONS OF BISHOP TADEUSZ WERNO

More and more bishops from various parts of the world are coming to visit Medjugorje. One of them is Msgr. Tadeusz Werno, Bishop of Koszalina, Poland. We gave a short notice about his visit in Press Bulletin #124. After spending some days in Medjugorje, he said this, among other things, about his impressions.

"This year I am celebrating 25 years as a bishop. It is my silver jubilee. I am here for the first time by persuasion of the pastor of Podstrzela in Northern Poland, who is profoundly moved by the spirit of Medjugorje. Once when we were talking, he convinced me that I must come to Medjugorje and that gave me the idea to be disposed. That is how I came.

The experience of the people coming to Medjugorje affirms that this place is a place of special grace. Many convert and return to the path of truth. I admit that I personally pray the rosary, but I get tired already after the first part. Here perhaps I was able for the first time to pray all three parts of the rosary. People pray it in different languages but that doesn't tire me at all. It is even nice to listen to. I saw that many go to confession, return to Holy Mass, to Holy Communion, to union with God who is here amongst us. I am really happy to see that here in Medjugorje the Franciscans, our brothers, lead people to Jesus through Our Lady. I am very grateful to them. I especially like the devotion of the Way of the Cross on Cross Mountain. It was something very beautiful. I also met one of the visionaries and we conversed with her. I was also at the community of Sister Elvira, who is helping young men with the problem of addiction. That is really a wonderful fruit of the Medjugorje events. In addition to that, yesterday I was observing the people during Holy Mass. Young men, young ladies, adult men, children - are all praying, kneeling for hours and going to confession. That is what we need the most. I believe in Jesus and I do not need the apparitions in Lourdes or in Fatima or in Medjugorje, but I do need the food to which the apparitions are inviting us and to which they lead us. Here the Holy Mass is proclaimed as the center of life. What Jesus Christ said has to be told, "Receive the Spirit of God, the Spirit of truth, the Spirit of love, be my witnesses in all parts of the world, in the family, on the street, in the school, everywhere. Have the courage to make the sign of the cross, rejoice and be glad."

And finally, I want you Franciscans to persevere in this magnificent task, to continue being instruments in the hands of God. I am confident that the present Pope blesses your service in Medjugorje, that he thinks of you in his heart because he loves Our Lady so much. May God through Mary's intercession bless you all together with all the pilgrims. You must persevere. This is magnificent."

MISSIONARY TRAVEL OF FR. SLAVKO BARBARIC

At the invitation of Medjugorje pilgrims, from August 28th till September 3rd Fr. Slavko Barbaric visited England. He also gave his impressions for the Press Bulletin which we convey here in full.

"The fire of the spirit of prayer and love for Our Lady Queen of Peace, which she herself has ignited in so many hearts is being conveyed and continues to burn, to illumine and to warm the hearts of pilgrims even when they return home. Therefore already now it can be said that centers of prayer are shining and giving warmth throughout the whole world and that the Church is being enlivened. Individuals, families and prayer groups are tirelessly continuing to live and to spread Our Lady's messages. Pilgrims are endeavoring to keep in touch with Medjugorje and for that purpose organize pilgrimages and come back again bringing new pilgrims, but likewise with the same zeal maintain interpersonal contacts and organize days of prayer, also even on the national level.

It is that way in England but also in other places. The idea that formed in the heart of Bernard Ellis, a convert from Judaism, a great friend of Medjugorje, and of the Croatian people during the war, continues to be alive and to grow. That is, eight years ago at the height of the war he suggested that a day of prayer be organized in England for all the pilgrims and the Medjugorje Network accepted. Everyone agreed that the best day for that is the "bank holiday" which is observed on the last Monday of August. They decided accordingly and they were proven to be right. Last year it was in Wintershall, and this year in Walsingham, one of the oldest shrines of Our Lady in England. In addition to that principal celebration, smaller meetings are also organized. This year the program looked like this:

On Saturday August 28th there was an evening program in the parish of St. Margaret in London. The young pastor Fr. Alexander Sherbrooke has been to Medjugorje ten times. He made his first pilgrimage while he was still a seminarian, and it made a deep impression on him and helped him in his further development toward the priesthood. Taking over a parish community he imbued it with the spirit of prayer that he caught in Medjugorje. Among other things he organized daily adoration in the parish from 11:00 AM till 10:00 PM. He also has more than a hundred people committed to come for an hour of adoration once a week. Many others come from time to time. The number of adorers is growing. The pastor also testifies to the great spiritual fruits in the parish. About 500 faithful came to the evening program that lasted four hours, everything just as in Medjugorje. After the program followed meetings with acquaintances and groups. All gladly witnessed about their experiences in Medjugorje and through Medjugorje.

On Sunday August 29th I participated in the meeting of "Youth 2000" as it is called. For a full five days about 1000 were together. In the area around the shrine in Walsingham they set up tents. Food was organized for everyone. There were lectures, prayers, and continuous adoration. The idea was born in Medjugorje and already for years is realized in connection with the Medjugorje pilgrims' prayer day. I met many familiar faces beaming with happiness and peace. Before noon that day Sister Elvira also spoke. As always she enthused everyone with her testimony. Again the same evening program with an hour of adoration as in Medjugorje.

On Monday August 30th, "bank holiday": already before noon a multitude of pilgrims from all over England began to stream in. Again everything was as in Medjugorje. At 1:00 PM we began with the rosary, followed by a talk, Holy Mass and Eucharistic adoration. The shrine director, Fr. Alan Williams himself a Medjugorje pilgrim, wholeheartedly opened up the entire area of the shrine. He briefly spoke about the meaning of Walsingham and expressed the wish that the spirit of prayer that Our Lady stirred up in Medjugorje be conveyed again also to this shrine and he invited everyone to come again also next year. Thirty priests concelebrated at the celebration of Mass and zealously heard confessions all afternoon. For the youth who participated in the five-day meeting, this was the final program. They especially enhanced the celebration of mass and adoration with their singing. In this shrine, which has its own bloody history already from the 16th century due to the conflict between Catholics and Anglicans, there is also an Anglican chapel to which Anglican pilgrims come. After the solemn blessing with the Blessed Sacrament the pilgrims went back to their cities and their homes. Many said, "See you in Medjugorje and here again next year!" After the program I moved on toward the north.

On Tuesday August 31st, I conducted a one day renewal for priests in the vicinity of Birmingham at Merryvale Institute, familiar to Cardinal Newman. Thirty priests were gathered. Among them were some Anglican pastors and one who with his family has entered the Catholic church and is now working as a catechist in a school. The meeting was very interesting. After I listened to their experiences with Medjugorje and the prayer groups in their parishes, I tried to tell them what an important role the priest has in this prayer movement. Both individuals and prayer groups must have sure spiritual guidance. And only a priest can secure that. All the priests confirmed that they understood Medjugorje the best from hearing the confessions of pilgrims. They are prepared to continue and to support all positive experiences. Listening to the experiences of the Anglican pastors it was interesting to find out that some of them with their faithful who have made pilgrimage to Medjugorje have also started prayer groups. That evening I had a program at St. Catherine Church in Birmingham. The church was overflowing. Everything was again as in Medjugorje. The pastor admitted that this kind of prayer atmosphere is created only when those come who have been to Medjugorje.

On Wednesday September 1st, I was in Manchester. In the early afternoon I met with the pastor and some priests from surrounding parishes. Each one of them sees in Medjugorje a new opportunity for the renewal of his own parish community. That evening there was the prayer program in a full church. Again the same atmosphere. In Manchester there is a Medjugorje Center already for thirteen years led by Tony Hickey. He often organizes pilgrimages and is very active. Right up to this meeting his pastor never wanted nor permitted anything to be organized in his parish. Then came a change of pastors. The new pastor had been the personal secretary for the bishop for 18 years. As soon as he took over the parish he threw the doors wide open to Medjugorje pilgrims. As secretary he got to know many fruits of Medjugorje and does not wish his parish community be left on the sidelines. Before the evening program the pastor wanted me to meet one of his 70-year old lady parishioners who is a fierce fan of Manchester United. When I greeted her she immediately began to tell how Croatia is coming September 14th and that it will be tough for them because her boys are the best. With a nice smile she promised that she will also root a little for Croatia because since she got acquainted with Medjugorje she likes all Croats.

On Thursday September 2nd, I started out early for Cardiff, the main city in Wales on the western coast. We drove steadily four hours in order to arrive by noon to take part live in a BBC program. The conversation about the Medjugorje events lasted about a half hour and will be broadcast again. Here also the position of the bishop has changed and therefore this kind of program was organized in this part of England for the first time. In the early afternoon there was a talk in the parish hall at which about 200 faithful were present. Since this was the first time, quite a few priests came and again some Anglican pastors among them. That evening a program was held in St. Peter Church. There was a beautiful atmosphere of prayer. Many expressed the desire to come as pilgrims to Medjugorje.

On Friday, September 3rd, I went early to London on the train. About 10:30 the Anglican Pastor Rodney, who had spent three months of his annual holiday in Medjugorje, met me at the station. He also started a prayer group in his parish community. He says that he will come again and try to organize a pilgrimage from his parish and thinks that the prayer day in Walsingham has to become ecumenical and next year he will organize his parish and invite others to be included. We spent some pleasant hours in a male Anglican monastic community that was founded in 1938. They live a life of strict observance, of much prayer and work. They all know about Medjugorje and follow the messages but they cannot come because the community is a strict cloistered type.

Full of impressions from the different meetings which are becoming more and more ecumenical, I went to the airport and traveled back to Medjugorje."

SCHEDULE CHANGE FOR THE EVENING PROGRAM

We announce to all pilgrim groups and individuals who come on pilgrimage to Medjugorje that, beginning Monday September 13th, the daily evening program in the church begins at 5 PM till 8 PM (5 PM rosary, 6 PM Holy Mass, blessing prayers and third part of the rosary).

MAN AND THE WORLD OF NATURE

In her message of August 25th Our Lady returns to the theme of the Creator and creation. We have heard about that before in her messages and it is not accidental that Our Lady directs us to know the Creator, the beauty of nature and the harmony of creation. The created world is a part of God's revelation in time and space. Therefore in man's meditation and practice of faith it has an altogether definite place assigned to it. A very great part of mankind today is practically cut off from the environment of nature. This has disturbed the understanding of nature which has become a chance subject. We take it as a partner only for holiday and relaxation. A more confused and hypocritical relationship toward nature calls existence into question. To discover God the Creator is the beginning of a new heart and a new consciousness that our rights over the created world are limited.

VISIT OF AN ANGLICAN BISHOP

The Anglican bishop, Michael Marshall from England was in Medjugorje on a private visit from August 30th to September 3rd.

FRANCESCO COSSIGA IN MEDJUGORJE

The former head of state of the Republic of Italy and life-long senator in the Italian Parliament, Mr. Francesco Cossiga, visited Medjugorje on August 29th. This honored guest and, above all, great Catholic was awaited in front of the parish office by the Medjugorje pastor, Fr. Ivan Landeka, the mayor of Citluk, Mr. Jure Dzida, officers of United Nations units stationed in Bosnia-Hercegovina, and the numerous Italian pilgrims who happened to be in Medjugorje that day.

Francesco Cossiga stayed on for hearty and friendly conversation with the parish personnel. Present for the conversation were members of his escort and newsmen. In his welcoming remarks the Medjugorje pastor, Fr. Ivan Landeka, among other things said that: "... after the civil war in Bosnia-Hercegovina only half of the Catholics remained, expressing gratitude to the Italian pilgrims who to a great degree have built the Medjugorje shrine and been among the first to come to Medjugorje, giving it support in the most difficult moments. The times in which this shrine was born were difficult. The people were subject to repression and those who came from abroad, and especially Italians among them, were a real stronghold of support."

Responding to his welcome, Francesco Cossiga announced that he came to Medjugorje for reasons of faith and said, "It is fortunate that in the modern world a place exists where people can pray. It is a wonder how you have preserved this place of prayer amid the storm that struck Hercegovina. I followed these events carefully and am especially connected to the Croatian people. I came to the Republic of Croatia while the war was still going on so I could give recognition to it. I have come back many times. Croatia has thanked me with honors and the issuing of a diplomatic passport. Thank you for this reception."

Francesco Cossiga was present at the Holy Mass for the Italian faithful led by Fr. Stjepan Krasic, professor at the Dominican University in Rome.

"DAYS FOR RELIGIOUS IN BOSNIA-HERCEGOVINA"

At the Humac Franciscan monastery of St. Anthony in Ljubuski the second annual "Days for Religious in Bosnia-Hercegovina" were held on August 26-27th with the theme "Religious Life - Sign of Holiness and Life of the Church." The seminar was attended by 200 men and women religious.

The first day's first lecture was given by professor Dr. Fr. Ivan Sarcevic of the Sarajevo Franciscan Theology School on the theme "Encounter with the Father: Conversion without mercy - Mercy without conversion." The second lecture was on the theme: "Healing of Memories" held by Dr. Tomislav Ivancic who presided at the Eucharistic celebration.

The second day's meeting began with prayer and a greeting by Fr. Peter Andjelovic, Provincial of the Bosnian Franciscan Province, and lecture by the Provincial of the Franciscan Hercegovina Province, Dr. Fr. Tomislav Pervan on the theme: "Mary - Co-worker of God." The concelebrated mass on the last day was presided at by the local ordinary, Bishop Ratko Peric who in his sermon stressed how persons in the consecrated state of life must in a special way be persons of light.

The men and women religious of the second "Days for Religious" addressed a letter of greetings to the Vrhbosnian Archbishop, His Eminence Cardinal Vinko Puljic.

WHAT IS LASTING

The time in which we live is not merely characterized by the fact of transitoriness. Transience is already an old theme to which nothing special can be added. In this time characterized by speed of change and multitude of news, another question arises, the question about what is l a s t i n g, about what is not subject to change. No matter how much we have become used to the new, we look for that which has stability and for something with which we can be forever connected.

As Christians we cannot accept that everything which begins in time also has its end in time. From that aspect we do not obtain our stability. We have celebrated the feast of Mary's Assumption (body and soul assumed into Heaven). That means then that the Kingdom of God is non-transient and stable. Among those who have lived it body and soul, Mary has a special place. For us who believe it, the task is the same as what Mary lived - to live it soul and body.

FEAST OF ASSUMPTION CELEBRATED

On the feast of the Assumption, August 15th, about 20 thousand pilgrims from every continent visited the parish of Medjugorje. Among them should be mentioned by all means the great number of Croatian pilgrims who came bare-foot on pilgrimage to Mary, Queen of Peace, from the various parts of our homeland. The feast itself was preceded by a novena of prayer during which at the evening prayer program a great number of the faithful gathered for the sacrament of reconciliation. Due to the variety of language groups Holy Masses during the day were celebrated in nine languages. The Rosary was prayed on Apparition Hill in the afternoon. And beside those language differences the pilgrims were connected by prayer and petitions addressed to Mary, first of all, in prayer for the peace we need so much. The solemn evening mass along with 68 concelebrants was celebrated by Fr. Gabriel Mioc who in his inspirational sermon called on the assembled faithful to follow the example of Mary, the Mother of God in their own life, first of all by unbounded confidence in and surrender to the will of God.

ARCHBISHOP OF SEOUL IN MEDJUGORJE

Archbishop Paul Kim Tchang-Ryeol, of Seoul, South Korea, visited Medjugorje from August 6 - 10, 1999 with three priests from his archdiocese (Rhee Dae Won, Chang Daee Ik and Chang Keung Sun). Following the thousands of Koreans who come on pilgrimage every year to the Queen of Peace, he came to get acquainted with this place of pilgrimage and the prayer and liturgical life of the pilgrims. As a pilgrim he prayed especially for his Church and the elimination of tensions between Koreans who are divided into two states.

POLISH BISHOP IN MEDJUGORJE

In the first part of August Msgr. Tadeusz Werno, Bishop of Koszalina, Poland was here on a private visit to Medjugorje.

We will publish his impressions in the next number of the Press Bulletin.

SEMINAR ON INNER HEALING

This year also from August 16 - 21, a seminar on inner healing was held in Medjugorje. About 200 faithful from Southern Croatia and central Bosnia-Hercegovina participated in the seminar which was aimed in a special way at people having family difficulties. The seminar on inner healing was conducted by Fr. James Manjrighal and Sr. Margarita Valappila from India. The impressions of all those who spent those five days in prayer and mediation were powerful. Therefore we believe that also in future years there will be an opportunity to meet in Medjugorje for such a seminar.

SEMINAR FOR GUIDES

Due to the interest of so many who would like to work as guides in the shrine of the Queen of Peace in Medjugorje, the Association of Pilgrim Guides in the parish of Medjugorje is organizing an educational seminar from August 23 - 27, 1999. After the seminar has been conducted, examinations will be held. All those who finish the seminar successfully acquire the possibility of membership in the Association of Pilgrim Guides, and the possibility thereby of working with pilgrim groups. All those, namely, who wish to work as guides in the shrine have to be known to have acquired sufficient knowledge to be able to provide reliable information to the pilgrims with whom they will work in the future.

The young applicants will listen to lectures on five subjects: The Messages of Holy Scripture (Fr. Miljenko Stojic), The Messages of Christianity (Fr. Milan Loncar), History of the Church in Croatia (Fr. Ivan Maric), The Messages of Our Lady (Fr. Slavko Barbaric) and Tourism and Pilgrimage in the Medjugorje Events(Maria Dugandzic).

We take this opportunity to request all those who lead groups to Medjugorje to hire a local guide who can help them a great deal during their stay in Medjugorje and, what is most important, are people who are prepared and trained to provide trustworthy information who do their job in cooperation with the Information Center according to the Parish office of Medjugorje.

PRESS BULLETIN 123, August 11, 1999.

YOUTH

"Today's youth loves luxury, behaves badly and scorns authority, challenges their parents, sit with crossed legs, and tyrannize their teachers" (Socrates). We would all agree that this sentence is an up-to-date statement of a disappointed parent or a worker in education. But, the Greek philosopher Socrates wrote it more than two and a half thousand years ago. Today's young generation is not the first that does not understand and of which it will be said that many good values gained so far will disappear. It is true that spread among the youth of this time there are forms of behavior that cause concern. They not only cause concern to adults, but also to many young people. Maybe really in those following and in her youthful courage are hidden the successes of many good hopes.

Last week several thousand youth came together in the parish of Medjugorje. They gathered around Jesus' mother, Mary, for a week to get to know Jesus in praying, singing, listening and dialoging. Just when it seemed that Mary was completely lost to theology and pastorals, young people are coming back to the Church of our day. Then how can we have doubts about them?

NUMBER OF COMMUNIONS AND CONCELEBRANTS

During July in the shrine of the Queen of Peace in Medjugorje 82,000 Holy Communions were distributed and there were 2,763 concelebrations at Holy Masses by priests from home and abroad, that is 89 per day.

We shall enumerate some of the countries from which pilgrims visited Medjugorje during the month of July: USA, Canada, England, Ireland, Holland, Germany, France, Austria, Latvia, Estonia, Korea, Hungary, Romania, Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Macedonia, Montenegro and, of course, Croatia.

FR. RUFUS PEREIRA VISITS MEDJUGORJE

At the end of last month, more precisely July 27-28, Fr. Rufus Pereira, the charismatic and exorcist from India visited at the shrine of the Queen of peace. The first evening of his stay after the evening prayer program he led prayer for inner healing, praying before the Blessed Sacrament. The second day he gave an inspirational sermon at the 7 PM after which he again led the prayer for healing. Along with the foreign pilgrims, also a large number of faithful from Bosnia-Hercegovina and Croatia gathered for it.

INTERNATIONAL YOUTH PRAYER FESTIVAL

The 10th traditional international youth prayer festival was held from July 31 - August 6, 1999. The theme of this year's meeting, in which about 15,000 youth participated, was "God the Father - source of life". The meeting opened July 31st at the evening prayer program. Sub-themes on which the youth dialoged and meditated were:

- "Mary calls: Return to the Father" (Fr. Maurizio de Sanctis);

- "Your Life - the gift of God the Father" ( Ms Jo Croissant Fr. Cosimo Cavaluzzo);

- "Cooperating with God the Father" (Fr. Tim Dieter, Fr. Maurizio de Sanctis);

- "The Father's love will heal you." (Sr. Elvira Petrozzi, Fr. Cosimo Cavaluzzo);

- "Mary, the handmaiden of Life" (Fr. Jozo Zovko, Fr. Cosimo Cavaluzzo);

- "Renewed by the Father's life, you shall be his witnesses" (rosary and Holy Mass on Cross Mountain.

The Medjugorje visionaries also talked to the youth about their experiences. The seminar ended with holy mass on Cross Mountain on August 6th, the feast of the Transfiguration of Jesus. There is a symbolic connection of the final day of the prayer meeting and the feast that the Church celebrates on that day. Many youth, that is, after the week spent in prayer, song, community, and recollection, return to their homes truly transfigured. Confirmation of that is this tenth such encounter. And all those in the future we put in the hands of God's providence, recommending them also to your prayers.

CELEBRATION OF THE EXALTATION OF THE CROSS

The celebration of the Exaltation of the Cross will be held also this year on the first Sunday after the Nativity of Mary, that is, on September 12th.

This is an occasion to introduce all of you who intend to come on pilgrimage to Medjugorje for that feast to a short history of Cross Mountain and the cross erected on it. About one kilometer from the Church of Medjugorje, as the crow flies, rises the Cross Mountain, interconnecting with the hill of apparitions and the church to form a triangle. At its peak (520 meters above sea level) the pastor of that time, Fr. Bernardin Smoljan and the parishioners in 1934 erected an 8.56 meter high reinforced concrete cross. On it are inscribed the words: "To Jesus Christ, Redeemer of the human race, as a sign of their faith, hope and love, the pastor Fra Bernardin Smoljan and the parish of Medjugorje erected [this cross]. From every evil deliver us all, O Jesus." On the back side of the cross in memory of the 1900th anniversary of redemption are inscribed the dates "33 -1933".

Inside the cross itself the builders embedded relics from Rome obtained especially for that occasion, a small piece of the cross which Christians venerate as the cross on which Jesus Christ was crucified, the largest part of which is preserved in the church of the Holy Cross of Jerusalem in Rome. The cross was completed on March 15, 1934. From then on the custom arose of celebrating Holy Mass in honor of the Exaltation of the Cross every year at the foot of the cross on the Sunday following September 8th, the Nativity of Our Lady.

The Cross Mountain does not attract so many pilgrims because of natural beauty nor because of the significance of the cross that is erected, but only because a great number of people confirm that after the start of the Medjugorje apparitions they saw various signs of light and others signs on Cross. They all related them to Our Lady's apparitions and to the message of the Medjugorje apparitions - peace between God and man and peace among men. They understood that the cross is central to Our Lady's messages and that the way to peace leads through the cross. Indeed a great many have found peace and their way to God on that mountain. In their pilgrimage devotion and practice they have included the veneration of the Cross. While climbing that difficult path to the Cross on Cross Mountain, pilgrims pray the Way of the Cross. For that there are fifteen bronze reliefs withOur Lady's image portrayed in each one placed along the path. Our Lady accompanies Jesus and us as well on life's way of the cross.

PRESS BULLETIN 122, July 28, 1999.

THE YOUNG AND THOSE OTHERS

Since society and the world are all the more pluralistic, the interests and goals of the people of our times are all more diverse, and because the views of adults about life, its meaning, and goal are ever more diverse in meaning, we cannot separate the young people of our time from that setting. What young people are today reflects all the diversity and division in society and the world both collectively and individually. The fact whether the older generation understands or does not understand them remains a great theme of society, of the Church, and of other institutions.

The Church is painfully aware of the departure of young people and their small interest in life and mission. Many good programs and ideas do not bring young people back to Church.

The eighteen years of Medjugorje hold out good hopes. Young people are the most numerous among the pilgrims and are making their mark on the shrine of the Queen of Peace. Perhaps here too is fulfilled that word of Jesus: what is impossible for men (of the Church), is possible for God.

THE VISIT OF A CARDINAL AND BISHOPS TO MEDJUGORJE

As we announced in the last issue of the Press Bulletin that Cardinal Bernardino Echeverria Ruiz, retired archbishop of Guayaquila and Bishop Victor Maldonado, both from Ecuador were on a private visit to Medjugorje from June 26 - 28th.

Two other bishops from Ecuador were here from June 27 - 29th on a private visit: Bishop German Pavon Puente of Tulcano and Bishop Carlos Altamirano, auxiliary of Quito.

In a conversation with Fr. Slavko Barbaric they said the following about their impressions:

Cardinal Bernardino Echeverria Ruiz:

S. B.: When did you hear about Medjugorje for the first time?

B. E. R.: Already a long time ago. I had a great desire to come here immediately, but till now it has not been possible. I am so happy that I have come. As for the messages, that is already well known to us because it is completely biblical. What attracted me was the desire to experience this parish community and to meet the Franciscan friars who are performing such a wonderful work here. It is real evangelization. Yesterday when I participated in the evening mass, it was for me a magnificent experience. Here there is time for prayer, for the celebration of Mass. I felt all the devotion while we prayed the rosary before the mass. It all touched me profoundly. I understood that, besides the message that Our Lady gives, her presence here is so important. God is speaking here through Mary not only to you, but to all nations and to all cultures. One does not come here because of tourism. One comes here for confession, for encounter with God. This is a divine moment for the world. In addition to the message and the presence of Mary, all the work that is done here is important. I personally feel here a beginning for the conversion of all Europe. I saw how many there are waiting for confession. A great many of the faithful go to Holy Communion and celebrate Holy Mass. And that is what for us in pastoral work must be primary and most important, that we be available for the people. Here that is happening. I am grateful to God that I have met my Franciscan brothers and the Croatian people here and I have felt your faith.

Bishop Victor Maldonado:

S. B.: What impressions did you get of Medjugorje?

V. M.: I can confirm that which Cardinal Bernardino Echeverria has already said: Medjugorje is a meeting place of God and man. Here there is found an authentic source of salvation. When one comes here, then he immediately understands that we are all in need of conversion. During these days we have met with the visionary Maria. We prayed with her during the apparition and talked with her. Truly we need conversion to be able to complete our task and to help others on the way of conversion. I have to admit that this visit here has opened my eyes to many things and that I would do a lot of things differently in all the tasks of my life.

S. B.: When you return, what will you say to those entrusted to you?

V. M.: Here I have better understood the role of Mary in the life of a Christian. I consider that for me a great gift and a great grace. So that is exactly what I will talk to people about.

FEAST OF ST. JAMES CELEBRATED

The feast of St. James, patron of the parish of Medjugorje, was solemnly celebrated July 25th. In the presence of a large number of the faithful the solemnity began with a procession from the parish church with the statue of St. James to the park where Fr. Slavko Soldo presided at the solemn Eucharistic celebration.

The parish of Medjugorje was established in 1892. Already then the parishioners decided to take St. James as their patron, who is also the patron of all pilgrims! The old parish church was built in 1897. Since it was built on soft ground, the construction of a new parish church was soon begun. The remains of the old church are located in the circle park next to the shrine. The new church was completed and blessed in 1969. It was too big for the people of that time and no one really knew why it was built so large. Just as in far back 1892 none of the parishioners could have imagined that millions of pilgrims would come to their parish and that St. James, the patron of their parish, would also become the patron of all those pilgrims.

INTERNATIONAL YOUTH PRAYER FESTIVAL

The traditional tenth international youth prayer festival will be held from July 31th to August 6th, 1998. The theme of this year's festival will be "God the Father - Source of Life". A large number of youth is expected to participate. The festival begins on July 31st with the evening prayer program. We wish a hearty welcome to all participants and abundant blessings from God.

EIGHTEEN YEARS

From the eighteen years of the events of Medjugorje it is possible to distinguish one element that is very important for understanding the phenomenon of Medjugorje. I am thinking of the following: After the first few weeks and months it became evident that one could neither influence events from the outside, nor by pressures of the government on the parishioners, visionaries or priests. The political circumstances in the beginning, incidents of war in the immediate vicinity or the recent events of war in Kosovo, give rise to insecurity primarily only on the part of the pilgrims. In the end such temporary situations of unrest strengthen the desire to come. Momentarily insecurity is brought in by declarations or by books that appear and they do harm because of ignorance or because of the real difficulties that Medjugorje does have. According to that, it can be concluded that the life of this shrine depends to the greatest measure on what the parish and the pilgrims do and on how they live.

The parish and pilgrims are deciding about the future of the shrine in those matters that are an unavoidable human factor in all the more important events that God sets in motion. To the extent that we are all the more aware of this, the more certain is the existence of the shrine of the Queen of Peace.

NUMBER OF COMMUNIONS AND CONCELEBRANTS

During June in the shrine of the Queen of Peace in Medjugorje 100,000 Holy Communions were distributed and there were 2,522 concelebrations at Holy Masses by priests from home and abroad, that is 84 priests per day.

We shall enumerate some of the countries from which pilgrims visited Medjugorje during the month of June: Germany, Italy, Canada, Reunion, Ireland, Belgium, Slovenia, Portugal, USA, France, Singapore, Argentina, Slovakia, Hungary, England, Holland, Poland, Korea, Switzerland, Czech Republic and, of course, Croatia.

CARDINAL AND BISHOPS VISIT MEDJUGORJE

Cardinal Bernardino Echeverria Ruiz, retired archbishop of Guayaquila and Bishop Victor Maldonado, both from Ecuador were on a private visit to Medjugorje from June 26 - 28th.

Two other bishops from Ecuador were here from June 27 - 29th on a private visit: Bishop German Pavon Puente of Tulcano and Bishop Carlos Altamirano, auxiliary of Quito.

We will report their impressions in the next issue of the Press Bulletin.

SEMINAR FOR PRIESTS

The Fourth International Seminar for Priests was held in the shrine of the Queen of Peace in Medjugorje from June 30th - July 6th. 170 priests from England, Germany, France, Italy, Slovakia, Poland, USA, Romania, Spain and Croatia participated in the work of the seminar on the theme: "The priest in the service of life". The largest groups were 30 priests from France and 60 from Poland. Sub-themes which the priests meditated and discussed were: "The priest in the service of unborn life", "The priest in the service of wounded life", "The healing of priestly life, "Prayer-life with God the Father", "Mary-handmaiden of life" and "Preach the good news of life".

For seven days the priests listened to lectures, meditated, prayed, celebrated common Eucharist and visited the Hill of Apparitions and Cross Mountain. In the name of the shrine of the Queen of Peace the seminar was organized and led by Fr. Slavko Barbaric. Presenters were Don Cosimo Cavaluzzo, Italian priest who specializes in preaching and helping organize various seminars, Msgr. Philip J. Reilly, who already for 30 years has personal experience in the fight for unborn life, Dr. Fernando Sanchez, physician and deacon, Sr. Elvira Petrozzi and Fr. Jozo Zovko.

At the conclusion of the seminar a joint statement was made which we here report in full.

"We Catholic priests from ten countries, with the participation of an Anglican pastor from England and one Orthodox priest from Romania, have spent 6 days on retreat in Medjugorje. The director Fr. Slavko Barbaric, Don Cosimo Cavaluzzo, Msgr. Philip Reilly, Dr. Fernando Sanchez, Fr. Jozo Zovko and Sr. Elvira Petrozzi have convincingly inspired us to a livelier trust in God's fatherly love for us. Their testimonies have also awakened in us the conviction and desire by our own priesthood to witness God's love to one another and to all people, drawing the strength from fervent Eucharistic and prayerful community with Jesus and his mother Mary. The leaders have inspired us to seek healing for our personal wounds, and with love to courageously present ourselves for the protection of human life from natural conception to natural death and for the healing of wounded life in human hearts. The Eucharistic celebration, rosary, adoration before the Blessed Sacrament and the Cross, pilgrimage to Cross Mountain with confession and the walk to the Hill of Apparitions have enriched our spiritual life in Our Lady's shrine in Medjugorje from June 30th to July 6th, 1999. Completely satisfied with what we have experienced and learned in "Mary's School", with God's blessing we return to our daily life profoundly grateful to God the Father, the source of life, for giving us the grace to gather in this place of grace and, in the school of Mary, mother of life, to learn to serve, preserve, respect and love each life as a very great gift of God the Father.

Medjugorje, July 6, 1999 We 170 priest participants in the spiritual exercises"

MILITARY PILGRIMAGE TO MEDJUGORJE

Several hundred soldiers gathered in the Medjugorje shrine on June 28th for the seventh military pilgrimage. In addition to Croatian soldiers, representatives of the Spanish and Belgian SFOR units stationed in Bosnia-Hercegovina also participated.

The encounter began at 5:30 PM in front of the church when the assembled soldiers were greeted by Fr. Slavko Barbaric. Then the soldiers participated in the evening prayer program: prayer of the Holy Rosary and then Holy Mass. During the rosary the soldiers had the opportunity to approach the sacrament of reconciliation. After the evening Holy Mass there followed a procession through the church yard with lighted candles. The procession and the prayer encounter concluded in front of Our Lady's statue with a blessing where the Medjugorje pastor, Fr. Ivan Landeka greeted the soldiers and wished them "Peace and Good". The highlight of this prayer encounter was the Holy Mass led by Fr. Miljenko Steko. In his sermon he proclaimed that: "No matter what kind of weapons a man might have, without God he remains insecure. . ." The assembled soldiers certainly understood that. Their response also confirms it.

THE PILGRIM PEOPLE OF GOD

The Second Vatican Council reflected on the meaning and role of the Church that is seeking and finding its place amid new circumstances. In the Church itself and all around it great changes have and are taking place. The Church, therefore, offers itself to the new world as a correspondent, and the Church expresses the most understandable description of herself in the sentence that she is: "The Pilgrim People of God passing through dangers and afflictions." This impression becomes understandable to the world that surrounds her. That way she does not isolate herself from the changes and difficulties of the times, but places her own mission at the service of man and the civilization of this moment.

Jesus Christ is the first fellow-traveler and the only mediator of that kind of Church. His and our Mother Mary whose fellow-traveling with the Church never ceases, who never tires of traveling with the Church through time, remain the sign of his staying. She is the road sign and direction sign of Christian living. She shows herself as such in the events in the parish of Medjugorje.

18TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION OF OUR LADY'S APPARITIONS

Throughout the last 18 years our Lady's presence in the parish of Medjugorje has spread to the world through the pilgrims. In spite of the events that struck our homeland, Our Lady's message of peace has reached even the most distant places in the world and made of Medjugorje a world parish. Proof of that is the presence of the more than 70,000 faithful who visited here for the 18th anniversary of Our Lady's apparitions in the parish of Medjugorje. To enumerate the lands from which the faithful came on pilgrimage to the Queen of Peace is practically impossible. We will announce only those with the most numerous groups: Germany, Italy, Canada, Reunion, Ireland, Belgium, Slovenia, Portugal, USA, France, Singapore, Argentina, Slovakia, Hungary, England, Holland, Poland, Korea, Switzerland, Czech Republic, and, of course, Croatia. Among them the most numerous group was a group of about 1,000 Polish pilgrims accompanied by a large number of priests. Exceptional also were the many Croatian pilgrims of which many came barefooted to Medjugorje to pray for peace to Mary, Queen of Peace.

Because of the difference of language groups Holy Masses in the mornings of June 24 - 25 were celebrated in sixteen languages. During the two days of June 24 - 25, 50,000 Holy Communions were distributed.

The evening Holy mass on the vigil of the anniversary June 24th, was led by Fr. Slavko Barbaric with 150 priests concelebrating. About 15,000 faithful were present at the Holy Mass.

For the anniversary itself about 30,000 faithful participated in the Holy Mass celebrated by Fr. Ivan Bradvica with 160 priests from twenty countries concelebrating.

For the 18th anniversary two ecclesiastical dignitaries were present on a private visit: the retired Archbishop of Split-Makarska, Frane Franic and the Apostolic Nuncio to Slovenia, Archbishop Farhat Edmond.

On June 25th, the vigil of the 18th anniversary of Our Lady's apparitions, the eighth consecutive "Peace March" was held. It began at 6:00 A.M. with a prayer and blessing of the pilgrims in front of the Franciscan Monastery in Humac. About 3,000 pilgrims then set out for Medjugorje. Priests from several countries carried the Blessed Sacrament and the "Peace March" was co-directed by Fr. Slavko Barbaric and Fr. Branko Rados. Upon arrival in Medjugorje the pilgrims assembled in front of the church for a short prayer in common. The "Peace March" is a concept that was born in the hearts of Medjugorje pilgrims and friends of Medjugorje during the fiercest days of the war in 1992. That prayerful march of 13 kilometers is a response to the lack of peace, violence and hatred, and an impulse toward authentic peace and reconciliation.

THE REGULAR APPARITION OF OUR LADY TO VISIONARY IVANKA

The visionary Ivanka Ivankovic Elez had her regular annual apparition on June 25, 1999. According to the testimony of the visionaries themselves, Vicka, Maria and Ivan have daily apparitions, while Mirjana, Ivanka and Jakov have the apparitions once a year.

On the occasion of her last daily apparition on May 7, 1985, Our Lady, after confiding the 10th secret to her, told Ivanka that for the course of her entire life she will have an apparition once a year and that it would be on the anniversary of the apparitions. And thus it was also this year. Ivanka had the apparition which lasted 7 - 8 minutes in her own family home. Present for the apparition were only Ivanka's family, husband and three children.

After the apparition Ivanka said that during the apparition she prayed for the parish and families and she recommended all in her prayer. Our Lady gave the following message:

"Dear children, thank my Son for all the graces that he has given you. Pray for peace, pray for peace, pray for peace!"

THE MALTESE ORDER IN MEDJUGORJE

Last year for five months the Maltese Order from Germany undertook the medical care of pilgrims who need medical assistance. During that period about 2,000 people sought their help. This year, however, they are staying for six months during which time they will also hold two courses: a course of first aid and a course on the care of the sick and elderly.

We take this opportunity to inform all pilgrims, who during their stay in Medjugorje will need medical assistance, that they can obtain it from the personnel of the Maltese Order in front of the Church where the sign reads "MALTESER" from 9:00 - 12 noon and from 5:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M.

TV STATION IN MEDJUGORJE

The Irish National TV stayed this year in Medjugorje from June 9 - 16th. For one week through the eye of the camera they made recordings of the events in Medjugorje. It will be a new incentive for the Irish faithful who for all these years have been among the most numerous pilgrim groups.

The Croatian national TV house also stayed in Medjugorje from June 14 - 18th. Already for several months they have been preparing a documentary film on the events in the parish of Medjugorje that will be presented to the Croatian public.

"FRAMA" YOUTH IN MEDJUGORJE

On June 5th 120 members of the Franciscan Youth Club "FRAMA" from erin, itluk and Humac, parishes all of which share boundaries with the parish of Medjugorje, along with the FRAMA members of Medjugorje, led the Rosary with songs and prayers during the evening prayer program. They also enriched the evening mass celebration with their musical expression. Since the novena in honor of St. Anthony of Padua was in progress, on the day after their visit to Medjugorje they altogether made pilgrimage on foot to the votive shrine of St. Anthony in Humac.

PRESS BULLETIN 119, June 16, 1999.

EIGHTEENTH ANNIVERSARY

Even after eighteen years from the beginning of Our Lady's apparitions, the parish and the immediate witnesses of the first apparitions on Crnica mountain have not completely finalized their impressions. Meanwhile the name of the mountain has changed, many things have changed and the generation born in those years has grown up. Millions of pilgrims have passed through the parish. At work through all these years have been critics and advocates of the apparitions. But one thing stays unchanged - a multitude of the faithful gathers everyday and opens up to God for him to surprise them and shower them with gifts of grace. In the first days it was the opposition of the government, later on it was the wars and the advisories not to travel over here. The pilgrims' heart did not yield to being bothered and dangers did not frighten them. Day after day fill new pilgrims and those already long known to us fill the church of St. James and overflow Apparition Hill and Cross Mountain.

God's work here has depended on little people, on priests, men and women religious who are no better than others. Here God chooses the unknown - not to shame the great and the wise - but for the one to open the eyes of the other.

Medjugorje does not cease to surprise. It does not cease to be a wonder. We believers are not allowing the ardor of prayer, fasting and the spirit of repentance to be extinguished. But what is that in comparison to what God is doing, to what Our Lady is doing for us?

"NINE NOVENAS OF PRAYER"

On the occasion of a report in the press about "nine novenas of prayer" Fr. Jozo Zovko has published an announcement which we bring here in full.

Fr. Jozo Zovko

Franciscan Monastery

Siroki Brijeg

Esteemed friends and lovers of the Queen of Peace!

I am writing this declaration due to a situation which arose in connection with a letter that appeared May 4, 1999. The letter calls for nine novenas of prayer for peace in the world and especially in the Balkans. The letter is based on the message of the Queen of Peace and the experience of the Church at Lepanto and in Croatia.

The letter is signed with my name without my personal signature. The letter is datelined at Siroki Brijeg, but under the title: Appeal for Medjugorje. Because of the artificial improvisation of texts that are most frequently catastrophic and full of fear and fatalistic threats, I feel the duty to protest against these letters and texts.

In truth these fatalistic and threatening texts are obviously contrary to the messages of the Queen of Peace who for eighteen years as a mother has been arousing, instructing and inspiring millions of pilgrims and followers toward an apostolate of prayer and fasting.

She always humbly and wholeheartedly thanks everyone that has already responded and is attempting to respond to her messages.

Yes, I do believe that it is possible to stop war by prayer and fasting, as the Queen of Peace teaches us.

Yes, I do believe that the prayer of the Church is changing the face of the earth and converting the hearts of people.

Our Lady is a Mother and she has never threatened with war or catastrophe. Her love awaits children, looks for children, loves her children.

Therefore I declare: The above mentioned letters were not written by me, nor signed by me nor did I in any way whatsoever participate in composing their content and message.

Fr. Jozo Zovko

FEAST OF CORPUS CHRISTI AND CONFIRMATION

On Thursday June 3rd the Church celebrated the feast of Corpus Christi which this year has a special place inthe memory of those confirmed in Medjugorje. Seventy one young men and woman received the sacrament of Confirmation as the sign of their Christian maturity. The sacrament was administered to them by the local bishop Msgr. Ratko Peric who presided at the solemn mass in the parish church. Besides with the confirmed, their sponsors and parents several hundred other faithful participated in the Eucharist. In his sermon Bishop Peric emphasized fostering the spirit of truth which they will receive in the sacrament of Confirmation. He called on them to witness for the truth which is Jesus Christ himself with a mature, faithful life.

At the beginning of the solemn mass Bishop Peric blessed the new church doors, the new confessionals and the tabernacle.

It was also especially festive after the evening mass when a processions with the Most Blessed Sacrament was held in the church yard. The Holy Mass and the procession was led by Fr. Branko Rados. The evening prayer program ended with benediction with the Blessed Sacrament in front of the Church.

STUDENTS IN MEDJUGORJE

Amidst the local faithful these last days has been especially a good number of students who at the end their school year go on their regular vacation trips. A large number of them have Medjugorje as one of their destinations where they do not forget to thank the Queen of Peace for their successfully ended school year and for their schooling.

PRESS BULLETIN 118, June 02, 1999.

P E N T E C O S T

"They were astounded, and in amazement they asked, 'Are not all these people who are speaking Galileans? Then how does each of us hear them in his own native language? We are Parthians, Medes, and Elamites, inhabitants of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia ...' " (Acts 2, 7-9). The miracle of the young Church truly began at Pentecost. The Holy Spirit filled the Christians with such strength that the language of the Gospel of Jesus became the mother tongue of all, regardless from which nation they came and what language they spoke. In order to confirm this miracle, St. Luke specified a multitude of nations.

Our Lady was a direct witness of and participated in these events and She gives witness thereof. Her message of May 25th - that we convert and believe more firmly in God - is an invitation which Christians can only follow as the first Christians did - in that the language of the Word of God becomes the permanent mother tongue of all Christians. Her presence in these times is an opportunity for the Church to consequently follow in the footsteps of the Lord.

THE NUMBER OF COMMUNIONS AND CONCELEBRANTS

During the month of May 88 000 faithful received holy Communion in the Shrine of the Queen of Peace and 2128 priests from Croatia and abroad concelebrated in holy Masses.

The pilgrims who visited Medjugorje during the month of May came from the following countries: Poland, Austria, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, France, England, Hungary, Belgium, Slovenia, Vietnam, Rumania, Brazil, the Netherlands, Reunion, Australia, Lebanon, Ireland, South-Africa, USA and, of course, Korea.

THE DAY OF "THE MOTHERS' VILLAGE"

The "Mothers' Village" in Bijakovii in the parish of Medjugorje -- where deprived children and young mothers and mothers-to-be are given a new home -- celebrated the "Mothers' Village Day" on May 22nd. On this occasion, the children also celebrated "Mothers' Day" which, according to the calendar, had already taken place some days earlier. However, this fact did not keep the children from showing their deepest feelings with songs and presentations, the feelings we all have - the love for the mother. They also did not forget the heavenly Mother, Mary. On the contrary, with songs they dedicated themselves and their earthly mothers to Mary. Participating in this festive program were the children from the Mothers' Village, as well as children from the Kindergarten of St. Theresa of the Child Jesus, which works in conjunction with the Mothers' Village.

After the program, the parents of the children who are attending the Kindergarten went to see the house of the Franciscan sisters who live with and care for the children. It is their love and and care that the children need and depend on because most of them have been left without one or both of their parents. At this warmhearted meeting, one could feel the harmony among the children, among those who live with their families and those who, unfortunately, do not have families. Once again, the children taught us that the boundaries between human relations are only created by adults.

The feast which was interwoven with the love and joy of the children ended with the celebration of holy Mass, attended by the children of the Village and the Franciscan sisters, as well as some pilgrims who are friends of the Village. Holy Mass was celebrated by Father Slavko Barbari, the founder and director of this great humanitarian project, and members of the Franciscan Youth from the parish of Medjugorje sang under the direction of Father Branko Radoš.

SEMINARS IN "DOMUS PACIS"

During May, a fasting and prayer retreat took place in "Domus Pacis" for a group of 50 pilgrims from the USA. The retreat was led by Father Slavko Barbari.

From May 21st to 23rd a seminar for the Franciscan Youth was also organized at "Domus Pacis". This seminar was led by Father Ante Ivankovi.

MARY - MEMORY OF THE CHURCH

In the month of May the Church turns to Mary, while still under the strong impressions of the Easter events. The Church thereby does not for a moment lose Jesus Christ from sight, but through Mary tries to get still closer to Him. In his homily on the feast of Mary, Mother of God, January 1, 1987, Pope John Paul II, while speaking of Mary, spoke of her as the MEMORY OF THE CHURCH. We could interpret that expression also as a new title that the Church gives to Mary. Seen from the view of history, theology, and content, that title says a great deal. No one else possesses the same total memory of Jesus from His incarnation to the cross, burial and resurrection as Mary does.

She brings that memory before the Church today just as she has in times past. The month of May is an opportunity for a Christian in faith and decision to accept that memory and to accept Mary as the authentic witness of Jesus' Gospel for this age.

VISIT OF AN ARCHBISHOP FROM PANAMA

In the last issue of the Press Bulletin we announced that Archbishop Jose Dimas Cedeo from Panama visited Medjugorje. We present here a portion of the conversation that Fr. Slavko Barbaric had with him:

S.B.: In brief tell us about yourself!

J.D.: I am an Archbishop in Panama, Central America. I am President of the Bishops' Conference. Spanish is the language spoken. Panama has about one million inhabitants, and it is interesting that it I the first diocese founded in all of America, and now has eight dioceses. I am 47, and bishop from the foundation of this diocese. The conditions in our Church are good. We still have sufficient vocations and it is especially important that we have many lay movements and active laity who bring a true spirit to the activity of the Church. We have many reasons for hope.

S.B.: What can you say about your stay in Medjugorje?

J.D.: I have come for the first time to Medjugorje. With me came twenty pilgrims. During these days I have seen and experienced a great devotion and zeal in prayer. That is noticed in all pilgrim groups. The readiness for prayer is amazing. The spirit of faith that is felt here in prayer encourages a renewal of faith in the hearts of all who are coming here.

S.B.: Are the fruits of Medjugorje visible in Panama?

J.D.: By all means, thank God. We have a parish community that is led by Fr. Francesco Verar. He often comes to Medjugorje and the church is made completely the same as this church in Medjugorje. Francesco has also founded a community that is called: The Sisters of Mary Queen of Peace. Every evening they also have the same program as here in Medjugorje. They are very active.

S.B.: Is this community already recognized by the Church?

J.D.: Yes. I recognized this community on the diocesan level when I saw what they are doing and how they are living and that their main work is to pray for peace and when I sensed their spirituality.

The community is in existence already for several years. They are having good experiences. And I invited the pastor, who knows them well and when he again confirmed everything to me, I recognized the community precisely on June 25, 1998. And that is exactly also the anniversary of the apparitions. I am fully conscious that this is a fruit of Medjugorje.

FR. RENÉ LAURENTIN IN MEDJUGORJE

The well known French Mariologist, author of numerous books about apparitions of Our Lady in the world, a friend of Medjugorje, visited Medjugorje last week with a group of 100 French pilgrims. During his two day stay in Medjugorje Fr. Laurentin participated in the evening prayer program in the church of St. James and visited Apparition Hill and Cross Mountain. He also gave a lecture on Our Lady's apparitions in Medjugorje.

FR. LEONARD OREC IN ALBANIA AND MACEDONIA

In mid-April Fr. Leonard Orec, director of the humanitarian association "Medjugorje-Mir", went with an Italian humanitarian convoy to visit Albania and Macedonia, the countries in which the greatest number of refugees from Kosovo are placed. In his report Fr. Leonard gives a first hand testimony of how he encountered all the things that happen in humanitarian work that the numerous humanitarian workers from around the world meet up with, who are presently trying to relieve the greatest humanitarian catastrophe of our times. The Albanian and Macedonian Caritas is doing everything to obtain and also to deliver the humanitarian aid to the refugees in time. And they really need everything: food, clothing, shoes, hygienic necessities, and medicines. Fr. Leonard is requested to advise everyone in the world who delivers aid to Albania directly to notify Albanian Caritas at least one week in advance of the address of the receiver, complete details of the contents, the vehicle data, the name of the driver, and the date and place of their border crossing. He also points out that it would be well for a representative of the receiver to meet them at the harbor of Dra. Thereby many inconveniences can be avoided underway and there will be a security that the aid will be delivered to those for whom it is intended.

Our friends and the friends of the Queen of Peace have always known how to recognized brethren in trouble. They have confirmed that now also for the humanitarian catastrophe in Kosovo. We are grateful to all to have help so far and give notice also that all further information about the manner of sending aid can be obtained at the office of "Medjugorje-Mir", tel. 00385 21 361 354; fax 00385 21 342 258.

CELEBRATION OF MOTHERS' DAY

On the eve of Mothers' Day, May 8th the children of the parish of Medjugorje after the evening Holy Mass congratulated their own mothers for that day as well as all the mothers of the world with an appropriate program. For that program the "The Little Doves of Peace" parish childrens' choir, under the direction of Sr. Slavica Kozul, with songs and recitations tried to express all their love and gratitude to the greatest of all loves - a mothers' love. Also participating in the program was the male singing group "Medjugorje". Through the one-hour program the children with selected lyrics and music sang to the mothers. But all those present, the faithful both from home and abroad left the church with the feeling that the deepest and strongest feelings were indeed still left unspoken in the depth of the childrens' heart. After all it is an experience known also to the many who come on pilgrimage to Mother Mary in Medjugorje: they returned to their homes taking also the experience of the Mother's nearness and love which till now no song has ever succeeded to sing. Therefore also this program dedicated to our earthly mothers ended with the thanksgiving hymn to the heavenly Mother Mary - To the Queen of Peace.

THE TIME OF THE CHURCH, II

"Matches are not won by spectators in the stands , but by players on the field." (Letter of German bishops on the occasion of the 1994 elections.) The time of the Church is a time that has completely definite tasks and obligations. Those tasks pertain to each Christian individually and to the Church as a community of believers. Whoever evades these tasks supports directly or indirectly the decline of the Gospel in himself, in his closest surroundings and in the world. The mission of the Church in apostolic time was oriented toward the world because that small community was filled with the promised Spirit which the Lord sent. The orientation toward the world flowed from the strength of the Spirit with which the community was imbued.

Our Lady by her coming and her messages of conversion, fasting, prayer, and peace directs us to be hearers and doers of the Word. She directs us accordingly to our own heart which has to be engrafted into the person of Jesus so that we, being filled with Christ, become bearers of the Gospel.

NUMBER OF COMMUNIONS AND CONCELEBRANTS

During April in the shrine of the Queen of Peace 90.000 Holy Communions were distributed and there were 1568 concelebrations at Holy Masses by priests from home and abroad.

We shall also enumerate some of the countries from which pilgrims came to visit Medjugorje during the month of April: Austria, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Slovakia, Czech Republic, France, England, Hungary, Belgium, Latvia, Poland, Slovenia, Denmark, Korea, Panama, Mexico, Canada, USA and, of course, Croatia.

AGAIN ON THE SAFE CONDITIONS IN MEDJUGORJE

Although for the vast majority of our friends the safe conditions in Medjugorje and the entire region in which our place is located are well known, it happens that a number of those who would make pilgrimage to the shrine of the Queen of Peace look for additional information about the safety of conditions.

Once more we will announce them all: the conditions of safety in Medjugorje remain completely unchanged. The war events in Kosovo are in a different state and are in no way connected with our territory. All airports in the Republic of Croatia and the airport in Mostar are operating regularly.

Accordingly, Medjugorje, a place of prayer and of peace, is completely safe for all those who come to it.

AID FOR THE EXILES FROM KOSOVO

Just as many of our known and unknown friends throughout the world responded and helped us when we were attacked with the destructions of war in the Republic of Croatia and Bosnia-Hercegovina, so also are now involved in helping the exiles of Kosovo. We invite all our friends at home and in the world at large, within the limits of their capabilities, to include themselves in the sending and collection of aid: food, medicines, clothing, shoes, hygienic necessities, and money. For all information about the sending of aid we request our friends to refer to the Association "Medjugorje-Mir" Split, fax 385-21-342-258 or telephone: 385-21-361-354, e-mail: medjugorje-split@st.tel.hr

BISHOP FROM PANAMA IN MEDJUGORJE

Last week Archbishop Jose Dimas Cedeo Delgado from Panama visited the shrine of the

Queen of Peace. The Archbishop of the city Pea Blanca traveled to Medjugorje with a group of pilgrims from that distant land.

In the next number of our Press Bulletin we will present a part of the conversation with Archbishop Jose Dimas Cedeo Delgado.

SEMINAR FOR YOUNG GIRLS

From April 23 - 25 the venerable Franciscan Sisters conducted a seminar for young girls

at the "Domus Pacis" house of prayer in Medjugorje. Fifty young girls took part and the seminar was conducted by Sister Leopoldina Kovacevic and Sister Petra Bagaric.

PRESS BULLETIN 115, April 21, 1999.

THE TIME OF THE CHURCH

The post-resurrection events, encounters of the Risen One with the disciples, his encouragement and instructions, are the beginning of the time of the Church. The eyes of people turn toward the apostles, from them one awaits testimony about what Jesus proclaimed and did. Accepting the responsibility of proclaiming the Kingdom of God, the disciples of Jesus with Mary, the Mother of Jesus, become the body of Christ. They are the visible sign of the living Jesus because they continue to live what he lived.

Why is Mary's role announced? (cf Acts 1:14) Two places in Luke's gospel help us to understand Mary's importance for the youthful church. Luke finishes the account of Jesus' birth with the words: "But Mary kept all these things, pondering them in her heart." (Lk 2:19) After the finding of the twelve-year old Jesus in the temple St. Luke writes of Mary: "And his mother kept all these things in her heart." (Lk 2:51)

Mary also in our time, the time of the Church, is revealing that which she carefully kept in her heart. From that heart Mary brings forth the heritage of Her son and hands it over to her children.

SAFE CONDITIONS IN MEDJUGORJE

Recently many of our friends throughout the world have been asking us about the safety of conditions in this area of the Medjugorje parish. We immediately answer plainly: the conditions of safety are at the same level as they were before.

The war conditions in Kosovo have no connection with Medjugorje. That is a completely different state with completely different problems. People are mostly misled by the fact that it is happening on the territory of ex-Yugoslavia, and they mistakenly think that it is still one state. It is time for us to quit that mistaken idea. The former Yugoslavia no longer exists. There exist only the states that have liberated themselves from Yugoslav tyranny and the state of Yugoslavia (Serbia and Montenegro) as the rump remainder of a failed idea. Accordingly, when you travel to Medjugorje, you are not traveling to Yugoslavia or to ex-Yugoslavia, but you are traveling to the modern state of Bosnia-Hercegovina.

Indeed even when the war was going on in Croatia and Bosnia-Hercegovina, travel was still safe to the parish of Medjugorje. Pilgrims have never abandoned this place of peace and prayer.

PRAYER FOR PEACE

Our mass media these days are loaded with the events of the war in tiny Kosovo. Unthinkable horrors have been happening there. It has all been pushed to the absurd. Events even threaten to change into a war of much broader dimensions in which numerous countries might take part. For all this it is necessary as soon as possible to establish peace and not to expand the events of war.

Today things would look completely different had the international community at the breakup of Yugoslavia helped those countries that were yearning for freedom to accomplish it in as simple a way as possible and not, on the contrary, to resolve it by war. Sad to say, it did not happen that way. A still more horrible and unforeseeable war has broken out and come to Kosovo.

The Queen of Peace from the very beginning of her apparitions spoke about peace and about the necessity of praying for peace. She said that by prayer even wars could be stopped. How seriously did we take that? Did we think she was talking to someone else far away, that something like that could not happen to us? It is time to listen to the Queen of Peace and for us finally to begin to pray for peace. The more there are of us who are praying, the less chance there is for war to break out anywhere. Let that prayer be constant, even when everything looks peaceful to us.

E A S T E R

Man gladly snatches at answers by halves and is inclined there where irrevocable decisions do not have to be made. That is understandable: we are on a path even in that kind of a hoop where sense and nonsense, death and life are mixed up, where everything is unfinished and incomplete. But it must not just stay that way. Life goes on and reality forces us, whether we like it or not, to give unambiguous answers that we back up by our personal life. Those decisions are for life or for death, for sense or for nonsense. (K. Rahner)

Jesus accepts rejection, he accepts it even though he does not want it, he accepts even death. But, he returns as the Risen One among those who drove him out of the world. As the Risen One, the Living One, he returns among his disciples, to those among by whom he was interrogated because of his last days.

The same Jesus in a new way is in the community of disciples. He is the same today in our community.

A blessed Easter to you and a blessed encounter with the Risen One!

EASTER IN MEDJUGORJE

During Holy Week and for Easter itself in Medjugorje there were continuously arriving new groups of pilgrims who wanted to prepare here and to celebrate together the greatest Christian feastday - Easter. In the Medjugorje shrine Easter was celebrated by several thousand pilgrims. Due to such a large number of the faithful the liturgies of Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday had to be organized in ten languages - specially for each language group. Among foreign pilgrims the most numerous groups were from: Germany, Austria and France. An exceptionally large number for all these days were pilgrims from all parts of Croatia, as well as from the surrounding areas that came to Medjugorje for their Easter confession. That so many pilgrims visited Medjugorje is witnessed by the fact that an average of twenty priests were hearing confessions during the three hours duration of each evening's prayer program.

NUMBER OF COMMUNIONS AND CONCELEBRANTS

During March in the parish of Medjugorje 52 000 Holy Communions were distributed, and there were 1041 concelebrations at Holy Masses by priests from home and abroad.

Some of the countries from which pilgrims came to visit Medjugorje during March and for the Easter holidays are: France, Austria, Germany, Italy, Letonia, USA, Mexico, Spain, Aruba, Colombia, Argentina, Australia, Portugal, England, Czech Republic, Canada, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, Romania, Slovenia, Reunion, Holland, Denmark and, of course, Croatia.

PRAYER AND FASTING SEMINARS

During Lent in the "Domus Pacis" house of prayer five prayer and fasting seminars were conducted. Participating in the seminars were 230 pilgrims from various language groups. The seminars were conducted by Fr. Slavko Barbaric.

MISSIONARY TRAVEL OF FR. SLAVKO BARBARIC

On March 19, 1999 Fr. Slavko Barbaric visited the Croatian prisoners at Den Haag. The meeting lasted from 1:00 to 5:00 PM. All of them made their Easter confession and attended Holy Mass. With Fr. Slavko was also Fr. Pavo Dominkovic, a Franciscan from Bosnia and missionary for our workers in Holland. He regularly visits and tends to our prisoners. All of them are very grateful for each visit, especially for the visits from Medjugorje because Medjugorje means very much to each of them.

On March 20th Fr. Slavko conducted a prayer meeting at the Belgian National Shrine of Banneux, where Our Lady appeared as Mother of the Poor in 1932-1933 and called for prayer for the conversion of sinners. The program began at 10:00 AM and ended at 6:00 PM with adoration and prayer for healing. Many prayer groups participated and ab out 3000 were present.

On March 21st a prayer meeting was held in Eindhoven, Holland. It was organized by the "Crucified and Wounded Love" community which has its mother house in Maastricht. This community is very young, yet very active. They have accepted Medjugorje and are spreading the message. All these meetings are only new proofs of how much God has done through Mary, Queen of Peace.

A N N O U N C E M E N T

With the time change to the summer schedule, the evening prayer program in Medjugorje

begins with prayer of the rosary at 6:00 PM, Holy Mass at 7:00 PM after which follow the blessing prayers. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is on Thursday after the evening mass and on Wednesday and Saturday from 10:00 - 11:00 PM. The prayer of the rosary on Apparition Hill takes place on Sunday at 3:00 PM and the Way of the Cross on Cross Mountain also at 3:00 PM on Friday.

THE PILGRIMAGE

Pilgrimages have always played a very important role in religious life and they are not only a speciality of Christianity. The Israelites considered their Exodus from Egypt into the Promised Land as a form of pilgrimage and still remember it as such today. Jesus also went on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem several times. The Church conceives its journey through the times up to the time of the second coming of Jesus as a pilgrimage and calls itself the Pilgrim Church. Already at a very early date, Christians from near and far set forth for the Holy Land in order to see Jesus´ place of birth, of death and of His Resurrection. Up to the present times, pilgrimages have remained an important part of Christian practice.

In the course of history, the places of pilgrimage have changed. New places of pilgrimage have emerged where the faithful gathered. The development of society and the progress of technology brought about new means of transportation. In addition to going on a pilgrimage by foot, other modes of transportation were used more and more. Because of these changes, the essential meaning of a pilgrimage was sometimes forgotten. The Church noticed this and took pains to organize pilgrimages so that their original meaning would return. Today people travel frequently and to far-away places so that there is a danger that a pilgrimage may turn out to be just an interesting journey.

The document "Pilgrimage in the Great Jubilee of the Year 2000" of the Holy Sea from 1998 gives theological and pastoral directions for a pilgrimage. At the end of the second millennium of Christianity, places of pilgrimage are being recommended to the faithful where many can experience the special closeness of God. In our times, the parish of Medjugorje is such a place and, as such, it must be preserved. It is the duty of all to safeguard in the shrine of the Queen of Peace all that, which has alrady led millions of pilgrims to Medjugorje for many years.

MIRJANA SOLDO´S YEARLY APPARITION ON MARCH 18, 1999

"Dear Children!

I want you to surrender your hearts to me so that I may take you on the way which leads to the light and to eternal life.

I do not want your hearts to wander in today's darkness. I will help you. I will be with you on this way of discovery of the love and the mercy of God.

As a mother, I ask you to permit me to do this.

Thank you for having responded to my call."

The appartion lastet for 6 minutes from 10:14 to 10:20 a.m. Our Lady spoke about the secrets. She blessed everyone.

MEETING OF THE FRANCISCAN YOUTH

On April 13 and 14, 1999, members of the Franciscan Youth - Frama from Zagreb, Široki Brijeg and Medjugorje gathered for a prayer meeting in Medjugorje. About 100 young Framas came here from Zagreb to prepare themselves for two days during this Lent for the most important Christian Feast - Easter. The young Framas from Zagreb have already been coming to Medjugorje for several years during the Lenten season. This year, they were led by Fr. Ivica Jagodi, the national assistant for the Franciscan youth. They were joined by the young Framas from Široki Brijeg who also have been coming to Medjugorje by foot for the fifth consecutive year during Lent. The young Framas from the parish of Medjugorje also joined them in prayer, song and discussion.

RESOLUTIONS OF THE SIXTH PRAYER-EDUCATIONAL SEMINAR

As we reported in the last Press Bulletin, the sixth Prayer-Educational Seminar for the leaders of prayer groups, peace centers and pilgrimages to Medjugorje took place in Neum from February 28 to March 5, 1999. 150 leaders from fifteen countries attended the meeting. On this occasion the participants made the following

DECLARATION

We have reflected on the Document of the Holy Sea "Pilgrimage in the Great Jubilee of the Year 2000" - the characteristics of pilgrimages to large Marian Sanctuaries - as they apply specifically to Medjugorje. Conscious that pilgrimages play an important role in the life of the faithful, we want to organize our pilgrimages even more wisely so that they truly become an opportunity and an occasion for the faithful to find spiritual edification through them, to deepen their spiritual life and to orientate their way of life towards God.

This is why we make the following recommendation to all Medjugorje Centers and prayer groups:

- to participate in the pilgrimage programs organized by their local parishes for the Great Jubilee 2000;

- in light of the above-mentioned Document of the Holy Sea, to prepare, accompany and organize pilgrimages to Medjugorje so that the pilgrims can experience "the silent and attentive contact with God and with themselves", especially in the Sacrament of Holy Confession and in the celebration of the Holy Eucharist.

T E M P T A T I O N

With the beginning of every Lenten season there is also an encounter with the event of Jesus' temptation after his forty-day stay in the desert. The basic question according to that is not how could it happen that Jesus was tempted, but rather how He resisted the temptation.

What Satan was trying to tell Jesus as soon as he tempted Him was the effort to show Him that what He did in the desert was useless and worthless. Retreat into prayer and fasting is unnecessary and does no good.

Of what value is it to Him when after it all he is hungry and has nothing by which to relieve his hunger? Satan, on the contrary, offers his solution to that: glory, influence, and wealth instead of his real vocation.

Our Lady in her messages warns us that Satan is strong and that he wishes to destroy God's work. Therefore the times of temptation and examination have not come to an end. Nor indeed have we been left without clear teaching, namely that teaching of Jesus: "Satan, get away from me. . .you shall not test the Lord, your God. . .Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds from the mouth of God".

NUMBER OF HOLY COMMUNIONS AND CONCELEBRATIONS

This past month is the time of year with the least number of pilgrims visiting. In the parish of Medjugorje during February 35,000 Holy Communions were distributed and at the masses there were 584 concelebrations by priests from home and abroad.

During February the more numerous pilgrim groups were those from: Mexico, France, Poland, Slovakia, Austria, Germany, Korea, Italy, Switzerland, Australia, USA, Czech Republic, Canada, Brazil, Spain and, of course, Croatia.

EDUCATIONAL-PRAYER SEMINAR

The sixth Educational-Prayer Seminar for leaders of prayer groups, pilgrim groups, and centers of peace throughout the world, was held in Neum from February 28 till March 5, 1999. For the work of this seminar the theme was "Pilgrimage - Part of Our Journey of Faith". About 150 participants from ten countries attended the seminar. The purpose of these seminars which have now been conducted for six years in a row, is a better acquaintance and exchange of experiences for those who work with pilgrims in Medjugorje and in their own regions throughout the world.

At the end of the seminar a Declaration was drawn up which the participants of the seminar adopted as their community statement. The declaration will be published in the next number of the Press Bulletin.

ANNIVERSARY OF THE MEDJUGORJE-MIR ASSOCIATION

We are a little late in reporting the news of one anniversary. The sixth anniversary of the establishment of the humanitarian association Medjugorje-Mir in Split was observed and celebrated on February 28th in the monastery of St. Anthony in Split. The Holy Mass was led by Fr. Jozo Vasilj, a Franciscan Provincial in the Congo. Fr. Jozo was born in Medjugorje and for a number of years has been preaching the Word of God in that African country.

After the celebration of Holy Mass Fr. Leonard Orec, the president of the association, referring to the work of this humanitarian organization during the course of these past years. Fr. Leonard announced that we have to be grateful to those who are helping us, and that is our duty to assist those who do not have while we do have and continued:

"While the majority of Medjugorje communities migrate away from this region, and many natives are closing their doors, it seems to us that our doors are opening up all the more and that the need for solidarity is all the greater. Thanks to the Medjugorje centers, an invisible network of solidarity has been created of which we too are a part. In that way this association has so far distributed more than 42 thousand tons of aid in food, clothing, medicines, medical aids and technical equipment. In addition to that that we are helping establish a quicker return of normal conditions of life to those territories that were affected by the war.

On this occasion was also observed the fifth anniversary of activity of the Association of Prosthesis which is employed in the procuring and production of orthopedic aids. In this past period of time more than two thousand different prostheses for invalids were generated."

We want to take this opportunity in the name of all of you, our esteemed readers. to wish this Association complete success in its further work.

WE ABOUT OURSELVES

Some seasons and periods in the Liturgical Year also have their own names. That distinguishes them from the other seasons in a particular way. It distinguishes them not so as to make the others less important, but so as to more strongly proclaim an essential element of the Christian faith. Lent is one of those seasons and during these days we have just entered into Lent. The content of the Lenten season is more or less the content of all the other seasons. The Church, because of its longstanding spiritual experience, nevertheless more strongly proclaims some elements of the faith. It proclaims them thus because retreating from them would also be retreating from the gospel way of life.

AMan digests the truth about himself with difficulty. Therefore, in this people keep the strictest diet@, one wise expression says. We are too busy with information about people and the world around us. We leave too little time and space for ourselves: what is the real truth about our own religious position? Talk about the necessity of prayer, fasting, visible signs of concern for one=s neighbor through reconciliation and solidarity, is talk about medicinal means that heal and then we are in a position to accept the truth about ourselves. That truth sets free spiritual and corporal strength for Christians Ato produce the fruits that belong to conversion@ (Lk 3:8)

THE RETIRED ARCHBISHOP OF SPLIT-MAKARSKA ON MEDJUGORJE

In an interview for Kulturni Obzor the retired Archbishop of Split-Makarska, Msgr. Frane Franic, referred to the Medjugorje events:

To the question: AFor you the mediation of Mary is unquestionable. What is Mary=s role in the modern world? What do you say about her role in Medjugorje?@ Archbishop Franic said:

AIt is a fact that there are numerous Marian shrines in all Catholic nations. The most known and the most frequented today are the Marian shrines in Lourdes, Fatima and Medjugorje. I am partial and an advocate in the Church of the many charisms that St. Paul enumerates in his epistles, prophecy, physical miracles of healing and praising God in other tongues, which is what I have in recent days read also in the Pope=s letter Fides et Ratio (Faith and Reason) in the Italian translation. There he spoke about mysticism and about the need for renewal of metaphysics in philosophy and theology. For me after some of my personal experiences, it was not difficult to recognize Our Lady=s presence in Medjugorje, where she has been speaking already for the eighteenth year through her chosen visionaries and thus to recognize the authenticity of those Marian apparitions. But one must also look out for false apparitions and locutions, because there have always been such false prophets and there always will be.@

MISSIONARY TRAVEL OF FR. JOZO ZOVKO

At the invitation of bishops, priests, prayer groups and the faithful, Fr. Jozo Zovko for almost a whole month was on a pastoral visit to Lebanon, Syria and Korea. On his return Fr. Jozo spoke with a journalist from Slobodna B-H. Here we report only the essentials.

AThe message of Our Lady of Medjugorje has reached the whole world, and even to Lebanon, Syria and especially Korea. Touched by Our Lady=s messages, many have changed their lives. Therefore they all want to hear direct witnesses of the events in Medjugorje and their testimony. At the prayer meeting in Beirut Fr. Jozo met with Cardinal Nesellah Boutros Sfeir, then Bishop Pakul Emile Saad, and the apostolic nuncio Bishop Armondo Bortolasio. Fr. Jozo stressed the heartfelt meeting with the papal nuncio who wished to speak with Fr. Jozo alone. AAfter we went into his residence, he thanked me for all that I am doing for Lebanon and for the whole world. He told me how he had been to Medjugorje once and how important the events and messages are that are coming to the world from Medjugorje. He said how happy he is because of that.@

The prayer meetings Fr. Jozo held in Korea were in overflowing churches and sport stadiums. During that fifteen day stay in Korea Fr. Jozo held prayer meetings in Seoul, Taeago, Choonchon, Osunjol and Pusan.

THE SEASON OF LENT

A great number of pilgrims, both individuals and groups, decide to come on pilgrimage to Medjugorje precisely during Lent. Therefore here are some announcements in connection with the prayer program in the shrine of the Queen of Peace in Medjugorje. Daily prayer program starts with praying the Rosary [ Joyful and Sorrowful mysteries] at 5:00 PM and Holy Mass at 6:00 PM. After that follows the blessing prayers and the third part of the Rosary [Glorious mysteries]. The Rosary is prayed on Apparition Hill [Podbrdo] on Sundays at 2:00 PM and the Way of the Cross on Fridays at 2:00 PM on Cross Mountain [Krizevac]. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament takes place after the evening mass on Thursdays and from 9:00 to 10:00 PM every Wednesday and Saturday. During Lent after the evening Holy Mass the Way of the Cross is prayed in Church. Opportunity for holy confessions is provided every day during the evening prayer program.

EXCUSES

In Her message of January, Our Lady refers to a theme which occurs very frequently in human relationships of man to himself, to others and to God. She talks about excuses. Frankly, excuses are used frequently because also circumstances occur frequently when one has to find an excuse for certain actions and failures.

However, there is also a type of excuse which leads to a deceitful defence mechanism and covers up the true motives. Excuses are being used to disguise ignorance, inability, lack of will, lateness, unkept promises and much more. By talking in such a manner, we get ourselves into embarrassing situations and this is also the reason for many broken friendships, betrayed trust and loss of self-criticism.

In Christian spiritual and daily life, continuous excuses lead to a hypocritical way of life and a destroyed relationship with God. "Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or ill or in prison, and not minister to your needs?"(Mt. 25:44) But we did not see you like this! How much is such an excuse worth for Jesus or a needy person?

Our Lady refers us to Holy Scripture and to prayer so that we do not succumb to those false excuses and so that they do not happen either in our personal, spiritual or working life. Reading and living Holy Scripture, sincere prayer and prayer from the heart are the best protection against the temptation to lead a futile life.

Radio and earphones for the simulatenous translation should be brought along; these are also made available at the seminar.

FASTING AND PRAYER SEMINARS AT DOMUS PACIS

The humanitarian association "Help" in Split organized a seminar for a group of 50 young people from Dubrovnik in Domus Pacis from January 26 to 28, 1999, as part of a program for the prevention of drug addiction. THE BEGINNING OR THE END?

The last days of the millennium are counting down. To a large degree considerations are being made about where it will be the most interesting to await the new millennium. Space is already filled there where it is most to be expected. Uncertainty and threatening prophecies have inundated the marketplace, the media, and the bookstores. All opinions and speculations are "welcome". One of the themes that is not accidentally selected, but is carefully prepared, is speculation about the end of the world. It should be no surprise that such speculation and illusions about the end also become a theme among Christians. As though talk about the end best corresponds to people without a clear vision, whether they are Christians or non-Christians.

A large part of the Western world is awaiting the "end of the world" in spirit: let's eat and drink, for tomorrow we die. It should not be forgotten that this part of the world has long been called the Christian West. The Christian spirit stand in contrast to this, a spirit that is neither from the East nor the West, but does not allow itself to be deceived with talk about the end. For Christians the end is not a theme. For Christians the real theme is the new beginning and in general being disposed to beginning. The Christian choice is not an end on the horizon, but a beginning in the view.

Before the Church with the spirit of a new beginning there stands also Medjugorje. Those also who have once come into contact with this place and Our Lady's message of Peace, should not be deceived into thinking that Medjugorje stands as a sign of the end. That theme we have not yet heard here nor should one believe those who with their empty baggage want to hitch a ride on the Medjugorje train.

Dear pilgrims and readers, welcome to your Mother. Her nearness disperses the black clouds.

RESEARCH ON THE VISIONARIES

INSTITUTE FOR THE FIELD LIMITS OF SCIENCE (IGW) - INNSBRUCK; CENTER FOR STUDY AND RESEARCH ON PSYCHOPHYSIOLOGY OF STATES OF CONSCIOUSNESS - MILANO; EUROPEAN SCHOOL OF HYPNOTIC PSYCHOTHERAPY AMISI OF MILAN; PARAPSYCHOLOGY CENTER OF BOLOGNA.

At the request of the Parish Office of Medjugorje psychophysiological and psychodiagnostic research was carried out on the subjects who since 1981 are known as the visionaries' group of Medjugorje. The research was carried out in four sessions:

The first research was carried out on April 22-23, 1998 at the Casa Incontri Cristiani [House of Christian Encounters ] in Capiago Intimiano (Como), which is operated by the Dehonian Fathers. On this occasion the examined were: Ivan Dragicevic, Marija Pavlovic Lunetti, and Vicka Ivankovic

The second research was carried out from on July 23-24, 1998 in Medjugorje. Examined were Mirjana Soldo-Dragicevic, Vicka Ivankovic and Ivanka Elez-Ivankovic.

The third research, only psychodiagnostic, was conducted by psychologist Lori Bradvica on Jakov Colo with the collaboration of Fr. Ivan Landeka.

The fourth psycho-physiological registration was conducted Dec. 11, 1998 in the same House of Christian Encounters in Capiago Intimiano (Como) with Marija Pavlovic.

The incompleteness of the psycho-physiological investigation was caused by the partial cooperation of some subjects who did not undergo what the working group had expected , due either to their family or social obligations or to their personal reluctance, even though Fr. Slavko Barbaric and Fr. Ivan Landeka encouraged them to do it, without any influences on the programs of the working group called "Medjugorje 3", because, apart from individual medical or psychological investigation, prior to this research two groups had operated: the first a group of French doctors in 1984, and the second a group of Italian doctors in 1985. In addition three European psychiatrists in 1986 carried out only psychiatro-diagnostic investigations.

The following collaborated in the "Medjugorje 3" work group:

-Fr. Andreas Resch, theologian and psychologist from Institute for the Field Limits of Science (IGW) - Innsbruck; General coordinator.

-Dr. Giorgio Gagliardi, medical psychophysiologist from the Center for Study and Research on Psychophysiology of States of Consciousness - Milano; member of board of European School of Hypnotic Psychotherapy AMISI, Milan and of the Parapsychology Center of Bologna.

-Dr. Marco Margnelli, medical psychophysiologist and neurophysiologist from the Center for Study and Research on States of Consciousness - Milano, member of the professors' board of the European School AMISI, Milan;

-Dr. Mario Cigada, psychotherapist and oculist, Milano, member of the professorial board of the European School AMISI, Milano;

-Dr. Luigi Ravagnati, neurologist; assistant for neurosurgery at the University of Milan,

member of the professors' board of the European School of Hypnotic Psychotherapy AMISI, Milan

-Dr. Marianna Bolko, psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, instructor for specialization in psychotherapy at the University of Bologna.

-Dr. Virginio Nava, psychiatrist; head doctor at Como Psychiatric Hospital.

-Dr. Rosanna Constantini, psychologist, instructor at Auxilium University, Rome.

-Dr. Fabio Alberghina, medical internist.

-Dr. Giovanni Li Rosi, gynecologist at Varese Hospital and specialist for hypnoticpsychotherapy, AMISI, Milan.

-Dr. Gaetano Perriconi, internist at FBF Hospital in Erbi/Como.

-Prof.. Massimo Pagani, medical internist, professor of internal medicine at the University of Milan.

-Dr. Gabriella Raffaelli, scientific secretary;

-Fiorella Gagliardi, secretary, community assistant.

The following tests were used on the subjects to investigate their actual psychophysical and psychological situation:

-complete case history,

-medical case history,

-MMPI, EPI, MHQ; Tree test, Person test, Raven Matrixes, Rorschach Test, Hand test, Valsecchi truth and lie detection test;

-neurological visit,

-computerized polygraph (skin electrical activity; peripheral cardiac capillary and heartbeat activities; skeletal and diaphragmatic pneumography) during the apparitional experience, during mediated hypnotic recall of the same apparitional experience.

-Holter's arterial pressure dynamic registration.

-Holter's electro-cardiographic /respiratory dynamic registration.

-pupillary reflexes (photomotor) and winking reflex

-video takes

-photographs

For all the tests performed the visionaries made their decision with full freedom, readiness and collaboration. The results from these psychological-diagnostic investigations show that:

During the period since age 17, from the beginning of their apparitional experiences, the subjects do not exhibit any kind of pathological symptoms like trance interference, disassociative interference and loss of reality interference.

All subjects investigated, however, exhibited symptoms that are related to justified stress that occurs through very high levels of exogenous and endogenous stimulation as a consequence of every day life.

From their personal testimonies it follows that the initial and subsequent altered state of consciousness occurs due to their unusual experiences which they themselves recognize and define and still continuously recognize as a vision/apparition of Our Lady.

The psycho-physical investigation was carried out on four states of consciousness:

-waking state;

-altered state of consciousness(hypnosis with investigation of the state of ecstasy);

-state of visualization of mental images;

-altered state of consciousness(defined as the ecstasy of apparition).

The aim was to investigate whether the ecstatic state of apparition, already registered in 1985 by the Italian doctors working group, still continues to be present or has undergone changes. In addition it was desired to investigate potential coincidence/divergence with other states off consciousness such as guided visualization or hypnosis.

Results of the investigation carried out demonstrate that the ecstatic phenomenology can be compared to the one from 1985 with somewhat less intensity.

The hypnotically induced state of ecstasy did not cause the phenomenology of spontaneous experiences and therefore it can be deduced that the ecstatic states of spontaneous apparitions were not states of hypnotic trance.

INFORMATION REGARDING THE ALLEGED DEPARTURE OF THE FRANCISCANS FROM MEDJUGORJE

In recent days a great number of pilgrims have referred to us for clarification on information about the alleged departure of the Franciscans from the parish of Medjugorje. The news is connected with recently published letter that was co-signed by Mostar Bishop Ratko Peric and the Minister General of the Franciscan Order, Fr. Giacomo Bini.

The news about departure of the Franciscans from the parish of Medjugorje and the taking over of the parish on the part of the Mostar Bishop, Ratko Peric, is not correct. Nor is it correct that some of the Franciscans currently present in the parish have to leave the parish of Medjugorje. The parish of Medjugorje is not at all mentioned in the decree Romanis Pontificibus as a parish that the Franciscans should have to give over to the local bishop.

Should there have been any change at all in this regard, our Information Center would have informed you about it.

With a hearty welcome to all pilgrims, I wish you God's blessing and peace!

MISSIONARY TRAVEL OF FR. SLAVKO BARBARIC

From January 11-15, 1999 Fr. Slavko Barbaric with Neno Buric and Vincenzo Cazzanigo, wards of Sr. Elvira's community and former drug addicts, led Medjugorje prayer programs and various meetings on the theme of addiction. This was all carried out in connection with the publication in Slovenian of Fr. Slavko Barbaric's book Pearls of A Wounded Heart.

Both the prayer program and the problematic subject of addiction and of possible freedom from addiction drew a lot of people. The meetings were held in schools, churches, on radio and television. Even local newspapers showed great interest in the young men from the Cenacle community. Prayer meetings were arranged in Ljublana, Kranj, Jesenica, Maribor, Nova Gorica, Kopro, Portoroz and in Leskovec near Krsk. The young men were received for conversation also by Ljubljana Archbishop Franc Rode while Fr. Slavko had a meeting with a group of 30 Maribor priests and Bishop Franc Kramberger.

TRANSMITTER OF RADIO "MIR" MEDJUGORJE FOR CENTRAL BOSNIA

It is unnecessary to talk about how important the media of social communication are in today's world. Conscious of that fact, immediately after the fall of communism we went to work here in the Shrine of the Queen of Peace. I believe you know what we have done so far.

Our newest project is the installation of a transmitter for Central Bosnia. That is the region which in total most heavily destroyed in this past war. To help them in the healing of their wounds we want to enable them to hear our "Radio Station 'Mir' Medjugorje" which along with the rest of the program carries a daily live broadcast of the rosary and the holy mass from the church of St. James Church in Medjugorje.

If you are in a position to help us before the acquisition of this transmitter, we would be most grateful to you just as also all the people of central Bosnia. You can send your monetary contribution in one of our three customary ways:

1. When you come to Medjugorje you can make your contribution in our PARISH OFFICE either by cash or designated check. If you cannot personally come, you can send it through a reliable person. We will issue a confirmation of receipt for you. Indicate that it is for the Information Center "Mir" Medjugorje.

2. You can give your contribution to ONE OF THE PRIESTS THAT WORK IN THE SHRINE. He will also issue a confirmation of receipt. Indicate that it is for the Information Center "Mir" Medjugorje.

3. If you think that neither of these ways is appropriate for you, you can make your contribution also through our BANK ACCOUNT:

TASKS

Two events, in a short time, changed the world for a little while. Christmas with its spiritual dimension inflamed a believer's heart within us, as with the disciples while still with Jesus on the road to Emmaus. Even though the events fade ever more quickly, Christmas will bear some fruit. If nothing else, then at least that we shall prepare and celebrate the next one more meaningfully.

The New Year's celebration in a different manner modified the world for a moment. We all talked about one unavoidably important thing - peace. To the most militant that word was more important than conflict. Talk about peace, health, happiness, improvement, community, and happiness practically banished every other particularly bad project from publicity. But the new year has not yet achieved what is hoped for. There are still many days til the end. Maybe something hoped for will be realized.

In that kind of calendar enclosure, Our Lady in her last message refers to and draws attention to the original source of happiness and peace, to prayer. Like some rare generation, we talk about the necessity of community, but it is all the more lacking. Not even common interests, which many today consider to be the prime-mover and reason for events, are not in a position to increase community. Interests, certainly even those we consider common, are not the source of complete community.

There has to exist something that unites which does not pertain to interests. For us Christians that is God. The path to Him is through prayer. Our Lady for that reason also proclaims the necessity of prayer. She proclaims it also on account of the capacity of prayer to unite and bring together varying groups of people, needs, characters, languages. . . Wouldn't that alone be a sufficient reason for us to dedicate ourselves to moments of prayer?

NUMBER OF COMMUNIONS AND CONCELEBRANTS

During December in the shrine of the Queen of Peace in Medjugorje 50,000 Holy Communions were distributed, and there were 904 concelebrations at Holy Masses by priests from home and abroad.

Some of the countries from which pilgrims came to visit Medjugorje during December are: Germany, USA, Portugal, Austria, Poland, Korea, Italy, Slovenia, Brazil, Gabon, France, Mexico, China, Lebanon, Argentine and, of course, Croatia.

Otherwise throughout the whole year of 1998 in the shrine of the Queen of Peace in Medjugorje there were 1,066,000 Holy Communions distributed and 27,854 concelebrations at Holy Masses by priest from home and abroad.

NEW YEAR

As already for a number of years in a row, this year also a prayer vigil was held for the New Year. It began with prayer at 10:00 PM and ended with a midnight mass. Several thousand faithful were present. Again on this occasion the most numerous were young people who came from practically all the European countries and from the USA. That is the way the parishioners and pilgrims together saw the old year out and ushered in the New Year singing and praying for the peace that is so needed for today's world and for modern man. Just how profound the experience is for those who once welcome the New Year in prayer in Medjugorje, is demonstrated by the fact that for this occasion the number of pilgrims increases from year to year. All those that came once come back again. In this uncertain and troubled world young people are nevertheless entrusting their future to God.

This year also in the "Domus Pacis" house of prayer a prayer seminar was held for youth wishing to enter the New Year in the joy of prayer and community. About 60 students from Hercegovina took part in the seminar. The Fund "Friends of the Talented" organized the seminar and it was conducted by Fr. Slavko Barbaric.

VISIT OF AUSTRIAN BISHOP

Ecclesiastical dignitaries are also all the more frequently coming to Medjugorje. At the beginning of December the archbishop of Salzburg, Msgr. Georg Elder, arrived. The evening before his departure we asked to talk with him. Among other things this is what he said about his impressions:

"I had heard about the events in Medjugorje not long after their beginning. In recent times there is a lot of talk about apparitions and as a bishop almost every week I was receiving something about apparitions, visions and revelations. I have to admit that during the communist period in Yugoslavia I often came on vacation to Istria, but I did not go further south even though I could have. I just did not have sufficient motivation. Then I began to ask myself more and more often: Why these completely simple messages that are still even being repeated? It is always a call to prayer, fasting, penance, prayer for peace. I said: That must have some meaning. What does a mother do when she raises her child? I experienced that at home: she always repeats the same thing: I have already often told you that! But I cannot stop saying: Pray, or do so and so. Mary acts the same way in Medjugorje. She always says the same thing to her children that are already now adult persons. And what else would a priest have to do in his parish? He is always calling to prayer. John Paul II once said that priests have to be the first to pray and have to be the teachers of prayer. That is what Mary, a good Mother, does. She teaches us to pray, really in a very simple way. Now I have to say truly that Christ's word has the value for me of being the recognizable sign: By their fruits you will know them!

My impressions here are not surprising. I know that groups from Salzburg very often go to Medjugorje, that new prayer groups are constantly being started, that there are more and more people who say: In Medjugorje I received my vocation! I am reflecting: We are losing three things that we are getting back again in Medjugorje: penance, conversion and vocations. In Austria we look in vain for these things: Conversion is not even mentioned any more because people do not need it; confession is dying out with us except in shrines and in the churches of religious orders where this sacrament is sought and lived; spiritual vocations are less and less. In Medjugorje this is happening constantly: confessions, conversions and spiritual vocations!

That is what I ask myself: What must we do for conversion to happen to someone? I have repeated to the members of Peoples' Initiative that, for me, conversion in their program has disappeared. Are we the ones who do not need conversion, the way Jesus says it in the gospel? Conversion is being excluded, and confession is being lost, spiritual vocations are less and less, and we are asking ourselves how can we at all keep up a seminary? But all that is found in Medjugorje. We are finding exactly that which for us has disappeared.

I still have one more wish: That peace come here between the Franciscans and the bishop, and that Medjugorje can truly develop in that way that Our Lady wishes. I am now convinced of the authenticity of Medjugorje. I have believed it for quite a while. I still wanted to come and take a look. When pilgrims called me to go with them to Medjugorje, I answered: I am spiritually closer to Medjugorje than some others are! My impression was confirmed because of the simplicity of the visionaries and the evening program. Everything is in the church's spirit and that, very, very simply. At the same time also very devoutly, with strong faith and above all with a strong will for conversion and real renewal."

GUIDES IN THE SHRINE

After the seminar held in August this year, examinations in November and December were held for the young people wishing to work as pilgrim guides in the parish of Medjugorje. About 40 young people took part in the seminar, and 25 candidates came for the exams. Out of these six passed the exams successfully.

The young people were required to demonstrate their knowledge of material from Sacred Scripture, the catechism, Our Lady's messages, as well as a general knowledge of tourist activity, history, geography, and the culture of this region.

At the Information Office you may seek the services of the young people who work as local guides in the shrine of the Queen of Peace in Medjugorje. They will help you intelligently during your pilgrimage and stay in Medjugorje since they are constantly at the source of events and of information.

GROUP NOTIFICATIONS

We kindly request all of you who organize pilgrimages to Medjugorje to give notice of your arrival to the office of information by fax number ++ 387-88-651-444 or by e-mail <medjugorje-mir@medjugorje.hr>. That is exceptionally important for us for the sake of more efficient organization of space and scheduling.
